1973, original paint... been tempted to repaint, but I don't mind the Arizona patina. (FYI - Roof & doors painted by PO in an "attempt" to match body... close but no cigars).
All right guys - I took all of your advice into consideration (I would be lost without this forum). Thanks again for all your input (and no worries Wile-E, it was all good advice).
Since the new compressor had never been started, I dropped my FJ60 at a shop this morning for a vacuum & r134...
I was working under the dash of my 1983 FJ60 last night and noticed what really looks like a 120v outlet... I didn't plug anything in it, in case it's not an inverter (& end up frying something).
The pic is from under the dash, passenger side, just above the side kick panel. So the question of...
Ok, so my plan of attack after reading all replies...
a) Keep chasing down the electrical issue to get system functionning (will inspect relay, switch continuity & resistance at pressure switch).
b) Definitely need proper vacuum & recharge done as soon as I can
Wile-E, in regards to me...
Ok, you just scared me a bit about 2% of air in my system being enough to cause negative effects... If I do figure out that it is an electrical issue, but doesn't cool down properly, I will then try to get a proper vacuum done at a shop.
As for pressure reading, unfortunately, the only thing...
Evacuate - let's just say "somewhat"... Took the poor mans approach. Disconnected lines in 4 spots, blew air through all. Reconnected everything, then started filling r134 from low side while holding high side valve open. As soon as r134 made it's way around to high side, I let the high side...
- I did follow the pressure recommendation on the r134 container per ambient temperature.
- When I push the ac button, I do hear the relay click under the dash (yet nothing happens). But I did not verify if indeed I do get current out of the relay...
- I will connect the compressor directly...
Just dropped a Napa rebuilt AC Compressor & new dryer in my 83 FJ60. PO had already done an r134 conversion, but old compressor's front seal gave out on me.
So... installed new Compressor & dryer, new seals on most line joints, added r134 friendly oil to both, did an old-school "quick-purge"...
My 2 cents; I am not an expert for CO values & such... but my 1983 FJ60 just passed smog tests in Phoenix with flying colors - and regular fuel & normal timing. I had failed miserably 2 months ago, even after adding a full gallon of denaturalized alchool (all smog values way off chart).
So...
Good tip for #1 & #6 wire swap, I'll do that this evening to see if I get a better reading. Also, are you all running at stock timing (7 degrees)? PO told me it ran much better advanced, and I "think" I'm at about 7 now (hard to tell with intermitent light), but that really dropped the idle...
Can't quite put my finger on this one, so need to tap into this vast pool of knowledge here (been living off this forum for past months, but first time posting).
If I clip my timing gun's clamp on the first spark wire, I'm getting really intermitent light... if I clamp on any other spark...
