CAMPTEQ's 80 Series Pop top Prototype

3/4 currently. I haven’t done anything with the plywood because I’m still deciding if this is my long term solution. I would like to use something lighter in a composite form, but I haven’t figured out what to use.

Unseasonably warm last night so I went to a nearby lake for the night. I took some more pictures of my platform bed. It’s still a work in progress as I’m working out the details.

I agree with Phil. The benefit of the cut roof isn’t for access to the bed, but to allow more living space in inclement weather.

Lack of overhead space mainly. Like I said it’s doable, but I don’t think you’ll be happy with it as a long term solution. If you don’t want to cut your roof just use a ladder as Phil does. If the sunroof hole was in the rear of the vehicle then it would be an awesome way to access the bed.

I only had my top for a day before I cut the roof. Before I cut the roof I tried the sunroof access for the novelty of it, it’s doable, but not very practical in my opinion. My wife laughed at me while I crawled in there.

I’ve got led strip lights installed. The issue is covering the hole in the headliner where the dome light/sunroof control, hence the idea of a visor shelf to cover it up.

I’m thinking of building an overhead shelf that a light could be attached to.

I agree about the gap between the roof and the campteq not being an issue aesthetically wise. The important part is making the headliner to the roof cut look good. The only reason I didn’t cut 3/4 was because I didn’t want to deal with the extra fabric needed to cover in the middle of the...

My mattress is also 3” thick foam and I can fit all of my bedding. 4” mattress will be to thick to fit everything plus roof insulation.

The bed platform is left up to you. Eric gave me a slatted bed platform and that is what Phil is currently using. Since I cut my roof I knew I wanted a platform that I could raise up out of the way and stand inside. I made a platform out of plywood into two sections. The main platform is 60in...

I cut my full roof out. Just as in the picture above of @ab1985. I kept excess of the headliner, then stripped off the backing so I was only left with the fabric. I then used pinch weld molding in a tannish color to attach the fabric to the roof sheet metal. It is difficult to stretch and shape...

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Fuel filter has been sitting on a shelf in my garage for months. The starter was giving me trouble so while I had the starter out I replaced the fuel filter. I changed the oil while I was at it, created extra room to work with the oil filter removed. It wasn’t that bad to change the fuel filter...

    1992 FJ80 Basic Travel Build

I cut my roof and at first I used two Exped inflatable mats. This past fall I switched to a 3in foam with a bed platform that raises up out of the way on gas struts. The platform is cut in two, the front part is 60in in length and the back is 20in. I cut the foam into two separate pieces as...

Rear hatch ladders other than Gobi?

I order one this summer and didn’t receive it until October. It was about 120 days. @swamp-thing had one this past fall he was selling, maybe still has it.
