    Swapping '78 FJ40 2F into '84 FJ60

Alright, done more research and have figured out some things and have more focused questions on the others that probably don't matter... For domed (and open combustion chamber) vs. flat pistons (closed combustion chamber), it seems like the power output is probably pretty similar even though...

Yes the pistons are domed. Looking forward to getting this behind me.

    1977 2F motor

So the '77 motor has an open chamber head, and is supposed to have domed pistons to compensate. Are the MAF pistons domed? What's your compression? If there's a mismatch between head and pistons, I think the compression test will reveal it. If the pistons are flat, an FJ60 head will restore...

    Weber Tuniing Question

Yep, I have NGK's. The pistons are domed as the head is also (before cleaning). OK on plugs, thanks.

    Weber Tuniing Question

Boaf, do you recall if the pistons used in the rebuilt 2F were domed or flat top? Also wondering if the head was open or closed chamber? Also, I recalled FJ40Jim mention NGK BPR4EY is a hotter plug. He’s mentioned W14EXR-U is the ND equivalent. Might be worth a try at some point.

effect of 3 flat top pistons in a domed top piston motor?

Here’s a link to a search I did of some of FJ40Jim’s piston info. He knows his stuff. I think FJ40Jim sells pistons. His Cruiser business is TLC Performance in Lancaster, OH. He has a website with contact info and a Facebook page. Search Results for Query: Open chamber domed | IH8MUD Forum

Building a Carbureted 3F Using 3FE Long Block and 2F Accessories?

I think you'd end up with low compression. The F and 3F have very similar displacement, but you'd get flat top pistons and open chambers intended for domed pistons (i'm pretty sure the "1.5F" has domes....). Maybe it would suit a turbo? (if only I knew a guy with a few spare 3FEs and a possibly...

    Engine Builder Wanted

Your engine has domed pistons and an open chamber head to match. 73 and 74 engines also had domed pistons but it was a small dome and a small combustion chamber to match .... so running the smaller chamber will give you about a 1 point compression bump. The 74 head is a bolt on with no mods...

    Another early 2F question...

No idea what you have going on, since it does not make any sense. :meh: I have operated Land Cruisers with the 6:1 CR combo (flat top pistons/open chamber head) like JimC talks about/was quoted from an earlier thread, and they are gutless.

    Help with 2F Head Identification!!!

From a Mark Whatley post in FAQ. '75-'80 US variant 2Fs used an open chamber and a domed piston. '81 and later 2Fs used a closed chamber and a flat top piston. Perhaps you need a later 2F head (81+) to match your non-us engine?

    BRS 77'

Really? The blocks are essentially identical between the domes and flat top pistons. It's the heads (open vs closed chambers) that vary between the piston designs.. I have seen people take material off of a open chamber head to make it work with the flat top pistons, but never that much...

79 fj 40 to efi conversion

Not without much more from the 3FE (like for example the head). And since his 2F is presumably a domed-piston / open-chamber variant as a '79, the pistons would have to be swapped to flat-tops to use the 3FE head. If the OP is interested in this option, search the term "2FE", I don't know much...
