Thanks for that explanation. Very helpful and I learned a lot.

And why is this not a great option for high altitude owners? Perhaps a little basic education on timing and advance at different altitudes would be highly educational for us. Thanks for your support to Mud members!

What can you tell me about this dizzy?

Thanks. I didn’t know where or how to search part numbers. I’ve bookmarked Toyota Parts Deal. 👍

What can you tell me about this dizzy?

Here’s what I know... It came on my 6/74 FJ40 but don’t know if it’s the original. I tried to clean the label with carb cleaner and it removed some of the paint. I won’t make that mistake again! Here are the numbers on the label: 19100-60066 029100-2720 F. 5M (stamped on the label)...

Help me estimate my timing setting - and where it should be.

A huge thanks to all of you. This is really excellent information and confirms my actual experience so far. However, I want to make sure I don’t have things completely backwards, based on what I read in the article attached to 1969FJ’s post. That article says you turn the distributor...

Help me estimate my timing setting - and where it should be.

Here is the background. 6/74 FJ40. Engine was de-smoged and it has headers. I was told the original owner milled down the heads for better compression but compression now is just OK. Everything else is pretty original. Oh and I’m at 9000 ft elevation. I set timing with a light and it idles...

    Emissions question

That’s as good an answer as we have so far! Mine is a 7/74. I have the engine and chassis FSMs so I may have to go for the hat trick.

Need tips for draining fuel tank, straining gas, and protective tank maintenance.

Thanks everyone. Some great suggestions. I drained the tank thru the disconnected fuel line hose and a small amount of particles came out at the end which didn’t seem bad. I may try and pull the sending unit and do a mirror inspection. And the tip about corrosion starting from the exterior...

Need tips for draining fuel tank, straining gas, and protective tank maintenance.

Would appreciate any tips and advice. 1974 FJ40 I’m going to remove and eliminate a broken electric fuel pump that feeds into my mechanical pump, which is also broken and will be replaced with OEM part. I figure I might as well drain the fuel tank and see if there is any debris before hooking...

    Carb rebuild dificulties

On further inspection of your photo, it does look that could be the metal piece that fits in the hole and covers the spring. And there are several indentations, it appears. The ones at 11 o’clock and 4 o’clock look like they may have distorted the perimeter of that metal plug, causing it to...

    Carb rebuild dificulties

I just did a similar rebuild and I remember that. I think the factory service manual says there is a little circular gasket that covers that hole. But my carb did not have one. I can’t tell from your photo but is that disk metal or perhaps some type of gasket material? If it’s gasket...

What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?

Rebuilt my carb, which finally solved my no idle problem. Now waiting on refurbished dizzy from 4Cruisers to arrive.

Lost my idle and obvious fixes didn’t work. Need help.

Update... I rebuilt the carb and the idle has been restored. The carb had a fair amount of extremely fine, black residue in the bowl that could easily have been blocking the idle circuit(s). The rubber boot around the accelerator pump shaft had deteriorated and had many tears. But now that...

Lost my idle and obvious fixes didn’t work. Need help.

I’m pretty sure the truck is a Federal, not California version. The sticker under the hood mentions complying with Federal standards and no reference to California. BUT it’s had some modifications that puzzle me. It has headers and the front crankshaft pulley has slots for 2 belts, but...

Lost my idle and obvious fixes didn’t work. Need help.

Thanks guys. I’ll go with the consensus here and first do a though search for any vacuum leaks, although on balance I don’t think my vacuum is that bad given my altitude and the condition of my truck. But I’m going to order a carb rebuild kit too. That can’t hurt and it might be the source of...

Oh and that 13 inches of vacuum was with the air cleaner off. Not sure if that makes a difference. if you guys think I need to search for vacuum leaks, let me know your preferred method and locations to check. I’m familiar with the vacuum 101 post in the FAQs but I’ll do some more research too.

Lost my idle and obvious fixes didn’t work. Need help.

Ok, I’ve done several tests which I’ll list. These will also answer your questions. I isolated the brake booster and this didn’t fix it. I checked power to the new idle solenoid and I’m convinced it’s working properly. It’s got voltage and I get a solid click when the ignition is turned on...

I think so, but will confirm that ASAP.

Lost my idle and obvious fixes didn’t work. Need help.

W No. I need to check that. I’ve done all my tests on the solenoid with direct connections to the battery. Duh.. I never checked the power wire to the solenoid. ....Give me 12 hours and I’ll have the answer. Great insight.
