Safely adding 3 or 4 point seat belts to a FJ40

No problem. I think the bolts for the rear heater could be a good spot for the receiver mounts, but you'd need to add some reinforcement under the tub. I'm not too happy with any of the mounts being attached to the seat frames, as the whole frame would very likely pull free from the tub in a bad...

Safely adding 3 or 4 point seat belts to a FJ40

I mounted the DS receiver on the floor using the seat mount bolt. It has to point to the rear, so I zip-tied it to the seat to keep it where I want it. Not ideal or permanent, but ok for now. For the PS, I mounted it to the seat. Not happy with this one either, but you can see how there really...

Safely adding 3 or 4 point seat belts to a FJ40

Here is the bracket I made for the driver side. Just angle iron cut with a grinder. I tied into the OEM roll bar mount on the bottom and the captive nut in the tub rail. Rock solid and just about perfect angle for the retractor. The issue is mostly with the top. I bolted the top mount to the...

Safely adding 3 or 4 point seat belts to a FJ40

I just installed the Humvee belts in mine. They're just ok. Overally, way better than the stock lap belts, but I still have some fab work to do to get them really working right. I'll post pics later of where I mounted things if you want them. I'm not sure if anything else is significantly...

Latest and greatest on preventing tcase leak out of parking drum?

I've only done it on my 4-sp., but IMHO, if your drum isn't grooved where the single seal rides and it doesn't leak, run that until it does. Once that setup starts leaking, go for the double seal setup. The double will eventually groove out where the two seals ride, so might as well put that off...

What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?

Not this week, but finished the disc brake swap a few weeks ago so I could get it off the jackstands and out of the way for a proper cleaning of the garage. And, got the family out to see my kid's teachers do a parade through the neighboorhood. Nice to see how happy everybody was to see each...

Tips and lessons learned from front axle knuckle rebuild

Having just done this (twice) in the last couple months on my '74, here are some things I'd recommend: If you have a welder, read up on the Martack technique. Saves you down the road when it's time to pull the axles apart again. Print out a diagram of the order everything goes back together...

    Shock Absorbers

Any other suggestions of where to buy Bilsteins? I'd love to support a 'MUD vendor/supporter if I can. Looking at some on Amazon. $83 each seems like a good price, but I'd pay more to help keep the doors open at a small shop.

    Need Longer Wheel Stud Advice

Cost was a factor for me too. OEM are just crazy for lug studs and nuts. I used Dorman studs for the front of my 60 disc brake swap on my 40. Seemed like the diameter was right, but the spacing of the knurling was off a little. Didn't seem to pose a problem at all when we pressed them in. They...

60 steelies and 40 hub caps. Stupid idea?

Because I already have these and I'm a cheap bastard.

60 steelies and 40 hub caps. Stupid idea?

I'm agreeing the more I look at it. I was hoping the holes would be inside the hub caps. It would look better if the 60 rims were grey or black, but just about zero bang for the buck here. I just wish there was a reasonably priced way to get a wider stock wheel. 33x10.50 will work, as has been...

    riding topless and dogs

The safest thing for you and your dog is to have him secured in a kennel that is secured to the vehicle so it won't move in an accident. It's harder than it sounds to pull off, but anything less is putting you both at pretty serious risk in an accident. Next best would probably be one of the...

60 steelies and 40 hub caps. Stupid idea?

Yes, black or grey for sure. The hub caps on chrome looks stupid. Mostly curious if anybody had done it. Price to buy clips, time to weld them on, time to paint or price to powder coat, and it’s stupid money, for sure. And a waste of time and money for 15”. Like I said, mostly just curious if...

60 steelies and 40 hub caps. Stupid idea?

Clips are available somewhere to weld on. Stupid idea? I have the 15” 60 wheels, but mostly interested in the idea to potentially going to 16” wheels. Stupid idea? Discuss.

    Door rehab

In the same boat. Is there a good source for the screws that hold the top window frame pieces in? Most of the ones I've seen are rusty and the heads strip out really easily when trying to pull the doors apart.

What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?

Went from this... To this: Almost done. Pressing the lug studs in tonight and installing the rest. Calipers and new, longer hoses to follow tomorrow, and I should just about be ready to go play with it this weekend.

    Heater lever parts

The SOR kit has everything, but will leave you sorely disappointed with what you get for the money. None of these parts are special. You’re basically paying for your time to not have to search for them all yourself.

    Disc Brake Swap Questions

This might be another option: I'll need to source a longer rubber hose anyway, so this might be even better. I would just need to find a hose with a 10mm female on both sides, grind the mount tab a bit thinner to accept the little spring clip to hold the hose, and mount up the hard line to the...

    Disc Brake Swap Questions

This might be the easiest/cheapest solution, albeit a bit of a redneck fix. This is the tee adapter from the drum brake backing plate. I could pretty easily cut the mount tabs off and weld on a bracket to bolt to the Long Range backing plate arm. I’d have to find a 10mm plug for one side of the...

    Disc Brake Swap Questions

Well, as I sit here at a standstill due to the wrong parts being shipped and me not noticing, I'll post a few nagging questions up. '74 FJ40 is being updated to FJ60 knuckles, vented rotors, 4Runner calipers, and all new hardware. Going great until I finished with the centering tool and realized...
