When I was a kid, my dad used our FJ55 to pull several diffrent camping trailers all across the country. Trailer size ranging from 26' to 29'. Him and my uncle built a 2" reciever that went through the stock rear bumper and continued under the gas tank to a crossmember that they added. It did not interfere with the spare tire carrier in any way. I would show you a picture of it, but ... well I cut it out and built a bigger rear bumper with three 2" recievers. Two for reciever shackle brackets and a center one for trailer pulling. However, here are some vintage trailer pulling pictures from my childhood. Local Colorado folks may notice the picture on the top of Independence Pass. They don't allow trailers on that road, but dad was never one for rules.

" Dad was never one for rules " I love it! I think anybody, who owns a 55, has a wild hair in them. Great pictures.

I've got a similar configuration with a 2" receiver through the center of my crossmember but not attached. It has kick outs to the frame rails at both ends, and angles down under my 55gal main tank. I'll shoot you some pics this weekend -

Bringing this old topic back up. I tried adding a standard rear bumper /frame loop 4 bolt receiver to my truck and found out that there is different bolt patterns. I’d like a class 3 but the bumper one would do. Any one have any other Curt brand or the like hitches on their trucks that fit with stock tank and spare?

This is what someone built on mine. It doesn't look too difficult to build but is looks way heavy. The rear plate is 3/8" and is attached to a "Y" that goes forward but around back side of spare tire and bolted to outer frame rail. I wanted to fill the hole in the bumper where an old 6-pin recepticle was but I was afraid to weld on the bumper that close to the gas tank. The hitch looked like too much work to remove- a bang for the buck type of thing.

I'm OK leaving the hitch on even though the pig will never tow (not allowed in MS with antique plate) or rockcrawl. I figure I'll it'll come in handy someday at a stop light with a drunk driver behind me. Trail armor, not for this one, traffic armor, yes please.

My wife and I were stopped at a red light in Denver metro in the late seventies when an old lady drunk slammed into the rear of my J**p (don't hate me, I was young didn't know any better then). We got out and she slurred, "what the hell you doing stopped in the middle of the road?" We replied "It's a red light!" She was in a VW Rabbit, I think, and her bumper hit then went under the $37.00 tow bar option. The towbar then continued to take out her grill, radiator, and coolant at least. After we yelled at her, she drove off with the vehicle puking down the road. We sustained 1/2" streak of white paint on the towbar and drove home. Best $37.00 vehicle option ever purchased.

The bolt pattern on the 55 bumper is the same as all other Land Cruisers up to and including the 300 series - standard NATO 3 3/8" x 1 3/4" bolt pattern. This looks like it would work nicely even without a pintle if you have to have a drop receiver:

I put a ball pintle made by Holland on my 80 series. It has worked extremely well over the years.

I mounted it with a chain plate behind it.

That’s what one would assume but apparently a South American 55 had different opinions of a “std hitch bolt pattern”. You can see on my post the @65swb45 supplied receiver sitting up against my bumper and another anomaly shows up. Really wanted to bolt on and be done. Apparently I’m making one from scratch.

Very odd. They must have made quite a bit of that 55 in SA.

I remember the systems mantra, "Buy it if you can, don't design and build it." I ignored that for years because I could always do it myself cheaper. I never accounted for my time, which of course, now is more valuable than ever. I guess I'm really a slow learner.

I say, "make it if you can, don't buy it". I like the feeling of knowing we push our self to the best of our ability building and fixing the pigs, not having someone else do all the work. I paid a hotrod guy to wire my wagon, but he let me work with him and I learned a ton. I wish I knew more, but my brain is small. :)

My mantra is make it or do it yourself if it's something you enjoy. If it's not something you enjoy then pay someone.

Bolt patterns
I fitted a rear bumper off a 69 FJ55 to my 79, two different patterns on the 4 center bolts…..I drilled the crossmember to match the 69 bumper.

Was one a South American 55? I ask because the parts diagrams show the same pintle hitch for all years.

1969 US FJ55:

51980HOOK ASSY, PINTLE
51980-69015

1979 US FJ55:

51980HOOK ASSY, PINTLE
51980-69015

FWIW, it's also the same part number for General Countries. Here, for example is a '77 Middle East FJ55:

51980HOOK ASSY, PINTLE
51980-69015

I have no idea on country of origin…..the donor truck is long gone…..my 79 is here…..I could measure the pattern…..
