This is an update to a very old 2005 but very useful thread. I have a 2005 Land Cruiser and it did not even have the door through which to place the filters. 2 years ago I had the famous drip problem on the passenger side so fixed it by replacing the 15 yr old gasket. Today I am removing the same cover to put in my new cover that allows the filters to be inserted. I ordered the new cover Toyota OEM PN 88891-60040 plus the pair of Denso filters PN 453-1001. One package includes both filters. Then after installing the new cover and inserting the 2 filters, I start looking for the cooler cover / cap that should snap on to seal the system. Hmmm. Found out that is another PN that must be ordered separately OEM PN 88891-30680 for about $12 on ebay. It will be in after I return from Cruise Moab 2022 so I tried duct tape to cover and seal the rectangular hole. The air pressure from the fan blows the tape off so I will have to wait for the cap piece to really get it right.
Moral of the story. If you have a drip and want to change the gasket, look to see if your cover has the filter slot. While you are at it, for the same labor, you can fix the drip, clean out the filter compartment, install a new cover plate OEM PN 88891-60040, cap OEM PN 88891-30680 and new Denso filters PN 453-1001 to completely retrofit filters. Now for the bonus round, you can double check the glove box courtesy light making sure the headlights/parking lights are on. It the bulb is out, then you already have everything disassembled to replace the burned out bulb too. #74 bulb type is supposed to work.
Correction needed to 30680. Bad part number. Did not fit when received. I had to go to dealer and order correct door cover. Will post updated PN when available. Do NOT order 30680 pn.

Thanks for the note. I have an older 2005 as well, production date April/04.
Also had a minor drip couple of times but stopped. How hard is it to replace the gasket? Do you have part number for that? Just in case it drips again, but so far it went away for a while now.
Keep us posted on the correct part number for air filter. The glove compartment door dampener string became untied, it was hard to fix that due to space constraints. Hope adding the filter door is much easier.

Wait wait wait, are you saying the glove box light only works when the headlight/parking lights are turned on?

Edit: Yup, that makes the light work. Cant believe I didn't think to try that. Okay, now back to your regularly scheduled program.

I posted 7 photos of my recent cabin air filter project using 100% Toyota part numbers. The only correction is for the actual filter quantity which needs to be 2 instead of 1. This puts the total cost at still less than $200. You can use the lower cost Denso part number I listed earlier which included 2 each identical filters. The gasket pn ends in 47040. You can get lower priced ones online as well if you are not under a time constraint. I ordered 100% from a local dealer due to time constraints. Suggest not starting work until you have all parts in hand. I was able to wrangle the old cover off and insert the new cover with new gasket in with some effort in less than 30 minutes total. Happy to answer any further questions.

Where is a good place to order just the Gasket? Searching for low total cost factoring in shipping.

Recommend googling the PN and pick the best price and availability. The online parts places always beat the dealer price. When installing the little gasket, recommend using something like silicon sealer used in pool components to help it stay in place while you are reassembling. Thanks to all the contributors on this 17 year old thread that is still helping new Cruiserheads make things better.

A cruiser specialist is getting this done for me while my rig is in his shop for timing belt service. Mine is also a 2005 100 series. He did give me the parts list which matches what you stated, but I wonder why they are all x2? I understand the air filter element is two but do we need 2 covers and 2 gaskets?
I also have occasional drip issue under the glove compartment, can you share the part number for the gasket? Thanks!

Only 2x is the filter which you can source from Denso in a 2 pack. Make sure you check the qty. i am seeing the Denso part number is 453-1001 comes with 2 filters for $18 from Amazon. This is much better than paying 2x $34 for Toyota PN 88568-60010. The qty 1 cover ($31 oem pn 88861-60040) has a place for qty 1 door ($21 oem pn 88891-60060). The door is only big enough for 1 filter to drop in at a time. The filters are identical and one stacks on top of the other. The gasket is the Packing Cooler PN 88578-47040 $14. Looks like a skinny black rubber worm.
Prices are ToyotaPartsDeal.com as a source plus tax and shipping. So the total cost could be $84 plus tax snd shipping.

Yes, ok, that's so weird the mechanic is asking to get two of each. And land cruiser is all he does. Do you have the part number to fix that AC condensate drip issue you mentioned earlier in your post? Not -47040, I have that already.

2 filters, one of each of 3 parts to convert. Confusion may be in cover plate & it's door (cover), one of each. One gasket is 3rd part.

BTW: I use 3m windshield Bytul, rather than Toyota gasket. In hopes it's a permanent solution. I also blow out drain from outside inward, while vacuuming attache inside.

I already have two Denso filters, 47040 (black skinny worm gaskets) x 2, 60060 x 1 on hand and just ordered 60040 x 1
Not sure why he told me to get two of each those covers and two gaskets. I ordered one cover each because that's all there's available at this time in my state's Toyota distribution center anyways. I just don't want to be short one, but I'm confident I'm good now that you guys confirmed it.

Can someone confirm if this air filter also serves the rear AC or is there a separate door/compartment? Lastly, does the air filter noticeably weaken air delivery vs. without?

It is not connected in any way to rear AC. The air that enters from the outside is filtered. I am unaware of a filter for the rear unit. It is possible and I would like others to confirm that the rear AC input air is recirculated from the inside cabin air that is already filtered (if you actually have a filter installed). I did notice any weaken air delivery with the filter. As a minimum, owners should clean out the debris that accumulates over the years. Great DIY mod for about $100. No regrets. Have done it it my 2005 and my son’s 2007.

2001lc didn't you have a better walkthrough forum somewhere for those of us who don't have the trap door and need to replace?

I think it's pretty straightforward IE : removing screws and swapping parts. But I could have swore you had a nice right up with pics for those without the door. Is it hiding in this forum somewhere?

does anyone have an aftermarket fix for the gasket? All places that have them in stock are days out from shipping, and I stupidly opened mine up to see if it just needed to be blown out. Gasket is shot and driving with bowl under glove compartment at the moment

Someone suggested 3M windshield butyl. I just looked up the Pn 88578-47040 and “ToyotaPartsDeal.com” popped up as in stock.

I ended up having the Lexus dealership in town order one from Dallas, should be here tomorrow. Just figured I would check if there was any update since the last time this thread was revived. Thanks Mike!

also, this cover is NOT the easiest to remove. Mine is a very tight fit behind the small plastic trim piece. Having to wedge it/shimmy in/out and up/down
