February 2023 ROTM Details

Date: Saturday February 25th, 2023

Trail: Montana Mountain - Counter Clockwise - Stocker Friendly but possibly challenging in a couple spots... some shelf road, some erosion, water crossings likely (<12 Inches), low risk of pin striping.

Agenda:

9:00am - Meet up at the Circle K just inside Superior city limits (1113 US-60, Superior, AZ 85173) to fuel up, grab snacks and roll call.

9:30am - Proceed to 33°16'59.7"N 111°09'55.9"W (Parking lot at 60/Arboretum Way) for air down, comms check and staging.

Comms: Having a radio is not required. If everyone has it, ham Radio (146.460 MHz) will be primary, otherwise we will default back to a quiet GMRS/FRS channel. If anyone has extra handhelds they might come in handy, I should have two extra.

Etiquette: I would encourage everyone to use their rearview mirrors: If you lose sight of the person behind you, slow or stop until they are back in view. If everyone does this, we will stay together and ensure nobody gets separated from the group.

Weather: TBD, but cold at the top.

Plan: Have fun, don't get lost, make a few stops, have a trailside snack or some lunch, keep a leisurely pace and enjoy the ride.

Must Haves: Patience, good attitude and a warm jacket.

Roll Call:
  1. @TheGrrrrr
  2. @Cruiserhiggs
  3. @Dimitris
  4. @cartercd
  5. @Mick Bowers
  6. Maybe you?
  7. Maybe your friend?
  8. Maybe some other person?
  9. @OffRoadScott is a "Maybe"
  10. @Saddletramp is a "Maybe"
  11. @Otter is a "Maybe"
  12. @Somebodyelse5 is a "Maybe" if his Dungeon Master grants him leave. He'll have to roll a 20 sided die to confirm.

What is everyone using for GMRS? I am looking at some of the Midland radios, would like the 50 watt one but $400 just for the radio is a little steep for me. Thinking of getting one of the smaller 15 watt ones they have and available bundle packages.

The 15 watt Midland MXT 275 GRMS is the one most folks are going to. $165. Mine works great up to a mile with a 3” stubby antenna. They are easy to use. I literally know a couple dozen people with them. No complaints. You can also get a pair of Midland GTX handhelds units for $80. They works seamlessly with the MXT 275 mobil. This includes privacy channels if you want. Midland has good customer service although its online chat.

For small group trail comms, any FRS/GMRS handheld is fine at 5 watts. Cruise Moab has moved to FRS/GMRS and most folks just have the Baofeng or Midland handhelds and they work fine. I have a $28 Baofeng GMRS-15 Pro that works great as a loaner along with two Midlands and I'd be comfortable using either one if my mobile unit failed. On a bigger trip where more range is needed, a more powerful mobile unit with external mount antenna or ham would be the preference.

I am out, parts ordered won't be in soon enough to have everything done in time.

I'll put this on my calendar as tentative... I don't think I've ever made it out to this trail before, interested to see it.

I have to head out of town for a funeral that is taking place on the 25th. Would someone be willing to lead the run in my absence?

I need to back out. My wife has asked me to escort her to a social event.

I am finally checking this spot regulary!

I have this day penciled in as well. Sounds like a nice time to be had.
Shawn

I'm out. Forgot we've got other plans this weekend.
