And just for fun we unboxed the VDJ hood.

Only good thing that happened today. Was good to be out at the ranch. 👍🏾

Yesterday was good and bad.

I had ordered stock OEM takeoff driveshafts from Cruiserparts…which is always a roll of the dice. Would they be rusty? Would the lengths work?

They fit and bolted right up. Things are looking good.

A new friend came over to the barn to look at a spare fuel tank, ended up staying and wrenching for a couple of hours. It was fun to meet ya, Spencer. I don’t know if he’s on MUD so I will have to dig that up. He helped me get the headliner in place. Things are looking up.

I then wanted to assemble the inside plastics and floormat. For some reason, I only bought a new right side and had a bunch of used left sides for the driver’s A pillar that looked like crap. Strike out there. I had a plastic baggie of the headliner and trim clips that I was using… I put it down and that sucker just vaporize into thin air. Had to order new clips. Crap.

Next, we tried to convert the doors from brown to gray and assemble… I pull the door panels out of their box where they have been sitting for three years… And they were the wrong door panels! FAWK. They had cutouts for the horizontal armrests, not the vertical door pull. Crap. New ones ordered.

I did stretch out the floormat to see how close the shifter hole cut outs will be. The R151/split case versus H151/HF1A is definitely much different. I might just break down and order the correct front mat because it appears to be available in the US system.

New mirrors and visors do make me feel a little better. Mirror uses M5x0.8 machine screws- the OEM were unavailable, so Lowe’s provided some stainless for $0.58.

One final aside: here is the arrangement for the manual door locks, and the linkage orientation. It wasn’t initially very clear to me whether the lock knob went inside or outside of the door handle linkage. Turns out it’s inboard. This is looking into the right door shell. Door handle is red linkage on left, lock knob is on right, inside door linkage comes obliquely in picture.

Just get new horizontal door handles , they are so much nicer then the small vertical ones , the doors have holes for both

@joekatana I thought about it but the door cards totally do not match up to the inner door skins! Holes are in all the wrong locations.

@davegonz stopped by tonight and helped me unload a bunch of parts.

Lo and behold, I found the stupid bag of headliner clips I had lost last time … On the roof of the truck. So in the most mundane of updates, here are the damn finished interior plastics.

Betty White, my old poverty pack, at dusk.

Oh look, it’s a great big box of Fix Your Dumb Mistakes.

Nate is judging me.

Good progress on a number of fronts today.

First, I confess my non-OEM sins. I used a non-JIS hardware store bolt to bolt up the throttle pedal bracket. The correct OEM hardware is on order, but won’t be here for three weeks and I couldn’t just let it stare at me any longer.

Next: power steering.

I have a new, 79 series high-pressure line and a used FZJ80 line. The orientation/antirotation tabs on both hoses were in the way, so I ground down the 79 series tab and it fit.

New style one piece pressure gasket is infinitely easier to use than two copper crush washers.

Low pressure side:

New takeoff paper clip cooler almost fits. Low pressure return line needs to be about 12”longer so I have some 3/8” oil rated hose on order.

This is a HZJ79 return hose that was too long so I chopped it off and it fits fine.

Next: finishing the doors.

Correct door cards arrived in that big old box, and I had new gray door parts to use. I could not find the plastic escutcheon that goes under the window crank, but I ordered a couple more. With all new inner and outer weatherstripping, the windows roll up and down nicely.

Driver’s door parts

I had to break out my good Toyota #1 screwdriver to tighten up the grips. I only use them for special ceremonial occasions, and this felt worthy.

Done. That feels good. Finally, one thing finished.

@jomelo the double cab has power windows and locks. I’ll have a little of both.

Nice work sir! Enjoy your special day and have fun wrenching this weekend. You’re making great progress, keep it up!
