Finally got my rock warriors from the powder coater after 4 months of waiting on a color that was on back order. I tried the 315/70/17’s then decided to go down to 295/70/17’s, didn’t really want to put the kdss spacers on. Wheel color is stealth charcoal with flat black rings, I was thinking of powder coating the screws black as well but haven’t made up my mind yet. Pictures are both with 315’s and 295’s.

The wheels look great but I would coat the hardware as well. Interesting that you dropped to a 295 and not the 285/75/17. The truck looks great regardless, congrats.

Low-temp powder?

Well the 295’s are the same as the 305/65/18 I use to have on aftermarket wheels, the 285/75’s are actually taller than the 295’s which is weird in a bfg ko2 atleast. 295’s 33.3 and the 285/75’s 33.9

Eh..
Heat treating foraged wheels is usually higher temp (500 Degrees) for 12-24 hours in cycles then quenched...solidifying the microstructure...
10-20 minutes at 400 degrees is not going to anneal the aluminum...
They are simply air cooled after being removed from the oven.. so evenly cooled

Aluminum Anneals at 650 degrees for most types used in wheels.

YMMV...

For sure, but if you were simply stepping down a size from the 315’s (35’s) then you skipped over the 285’s (34’s) is all.

Like the subtle color difference. The ring bolts give a bit of contrast/accent to the caps.

A running joke in one of the performance car forums I also frequent is that sooner or later you will own a black vehicle. All that is left is trim.

Been there done that black vehicle……. Never again lol. Black is to hard to take care of.

The 285/70’s are smaller than the 305’s I had on the truck, which I did run 285/65/18’s for a while just didn’t like how skinny they were. I didn’t want a smaller tire.

Well we will see if it flakes he’ll do them again no problem.

285/75/17 is taller than the 295’s you’re running and would have the been the next size down from the 315’s. You’re confusing a 285/70/17 (32.7x11.2) with the 285/75/17 (33.8x11.2), two totally different sizes.

if its a quality surface prep should be no issues with flaking, just sratches from rocks..

I'm on the fence about powder coating mine or just painting them since they will get used in rocks and scratched up... 100%

I have no worries about the heat curing of powder coating.

Taller as in they would have probably rubbed which is why I didn’t go with the 285/75’s 33.9 vs 315/70-34.4 since I already dismounted once already I didn’t want to go through all this again so I just played it safe the second time with a tire size that wouldn’t rub.

Got you, I don’t think the paint will hold up as good, but then again powder coating doesn’t last forever either.

Cure time can go much longer if they are dealing with offgassing issues.

Point is, this isn’t a highly standardized process and most of the shops doing it don’t consider wheel material, but as the customer you can specify the low-temp powder.

It is best practice for forged wheels if you want to keep them as strong as they were designed to be. Considering how light rock warriors are compared to stock, I want mine to be as strong as designed.

@Tex68w I think @Cruiser200 might have wanted to go wider without necesserely going much taller.

If so, that is similar to what I'm thinking for my next tire setup. Heck, the 315 wide tires on my Supras make 285 look like bicycle tires on a large Land Cruiser when looking from the rear. Come to think of it... my Land Cruiser and Miata both share 9" wide wheels, s*** 🤣

Yep that is what I wanted, to me wide makes it look better. Heck yeah 315 is wide as s*** on a car, I was thinking the 255’s on my 300ZX was wide for a factory wheel. You must have some nice deep dish wheels on the Supra.

Oh yeah, Supras currently on 11.5 CCW Classics on 315s. Max was 275 on factory wheels.

Miss my 300ZX, but sold it 15+ years ago at this point. Timeless looks, IMO.
