What grade of SS do they advertise?

Most exhaust is made of 409SS. It will surface rust, particularly when exposed to heat like an exhaust system.

If you want a grade that will not corrode to that level, it needs to be 304SS or 316SS. However, every place there is a weld will corrode because they should be using 309SS wire for the weld unless the are doing TIG welds, then they can use like material, but the heat of fusion will still bring some of the carbon to the surface unless it has been chemically passivated after welding.

I would expect 409SS exhaust to look like that after 7 months, and especially if you have done any driving in areas where they have chemically treated the roads.

How many miles do you have on it (to get an idea of heat cycling)
Exactly, many different kinds of stainless and it kind of defeats the purposes when it gets welded with a mig welder instead of tig welded or v band clamped.

@GGM rear tire carrier installed. Install was super smooth. Now I can get a full size spare, relocate my towing harness, get a tank under the rear, etc. I didn't have a need for a fully armored rear bumper (or spend $2,500+) so this is the best case solution. Definitely need a piston/strut as it swings very freely, but that should be a cheap addition I just need to measure everything out.

It's 409. But that downpipe is powder coated. It should not be rusted through.

I drove it on treated roads for 2 days and pressure washed it the day after.

I have less than 10000 miles on it.

I'd be irritated too with how that looks. I just replaced mine last summer with regular parts from RockAuto. Sprayed it with a good bit of silver VHT exhaust paint. There's only a couple of spots that trying to surface rust through it. Probably just didn't clean it good enough or it rubbed when I was installing everything. They put so much salt on the roads here I'm pleased with how well it's holding up. Worse case I just give it a touch up. Hopefully they honor the warranty on yours.

Was that engine working in this condition? Or an engine you are repairing
It is a engine I might be repairing. I need to tear down the bottom end and see what the crank looks like. I knew it had been sitting but I was not aware of the moisture or I probable would have passed. Everything is fixable so far.
