The Trailer you well want a 10K, Brakes on both axles. Great Northern trailer works make a really nice all tube trailer. There in Oregon.
If your going to use a slide in Camper you Need a 1ton minimum. With the Trailers tongue weigh you will still most likely be over the trucks rear axle weight rating.
To do it right you need a dually F450 or a F350 camper package dually they both have a 14000 lb GVWR or eguivalent.

My F350 camper package dually 14000lb GVWR, Full side slide camper 5K lb wet and ready. I get 10 MPG with the camper pulling the trailer with the 80 on it. Super stable comfortable ride with enough power to pass on any hill.

I towed my crawler Grand Cherokee ~6k weight on a 20' Innovative Trailer Equipment (3k empty) trailer all over the west with a 2010 F150, with a whole bunch of stuff inside the jeep and on the trailer, and inside the truck. Handled it just fine. But if adding a camper, definitely want 1 ton or bigger.

Driving in mountains, brakes on both axles is a must. Also planning routes to avoid mountain passes, driving at night so there's lower temps and less traffic, regardless of tow vehicle size. Nothing worse than rush hour traffic in UT, where they love to slam on brakes at the last second. A weight distribution hitch and a sway controller are a must.

Why not look into a van? I love my transit 250. It tows, it carries things inside and I can set it up to sleep. There is an HD version with dual rear wheels.
Much cheaper to setup for sleeping than having to purchase an extra camper for a truck. The important thing is getting a light enough trailer that can carry enough. I am eventually going to buy a nicer trailer but as you can see from the pics, she can do almost everything I ask.

With a max tow capacity of 6400 I'd say you over towing in most cases!

JMHO If you need a weight distribution hitch and sway controller then you don’t have the right Tow Rig 😉

Max tow is a bit more. Mine is rated for 6900 but you can get up to 7500 rating with diesel engine. I have the ecoboost engine but you could not get 4.10 gears which the non turbo got.
What I love about the ecoboost engine is that it doesn't give a sh*t if you are above 8000 ft loaded It just keeps pulling. It's certainly not a diesel but it gets the job done.

towed in the mountains in TN just fine with the 3.4 but i know thats different. just saying you dont need a C7 cat to tow one around. its not that heavy of a vehicle. if you can afford to get a diesel then do it but if you cant any of the modern V8s will pull it.
The C7 in our 40' Tiffin handles our FZJ80 quite well :)

A buddy just borrowed my trailer for the Christmas break to pull his 80 with a 40 footer with a c7.

Page 15 is your friend. Ford has been really bragging about their new Superduty lately. Actually a little surprised but a single cab 8' 4x4 with their 7.3 Godzilla gasser single wheel rear(SRW) might get you there, 1400lb tongue on that trailer leaves you 3000lbs for the family, gear and slide in. 4x2 would get you a bit more. Order one now, you might get lucky to see it in June.
Avoid the Tremor, worse payload by far and usually the case with the special suspensions and add on's.

I don't own a caravan or camper trailer, but I have towed loaded car trailers (roughly 2 tonne ATM), and I have an often-used covered off-road 6 x 4 ft box trailer (unbraked) that is legally allowed to be up to 0.75 tonne ATM. It's been used heaps in the last 5 yrs. Requires a rego inspection each year as it's over 0.25 tonne tare though so rego costs for it with taxes are around $200 a year.

I hope you got the 3500 !!
2500. I wanted the coils, not leafs. I'll add aftermarket bags if I decide it's too soft. Other than the springs there's essentially no difference.

The coil springs are inboard of the frame and don’t carry the load as well as the leaf springs.
It’s well Documented in the slide in camper would.
The 2500 is great for towing but can’t carry a small camper let alone pull a trailer when doing it.
I had a F250 6.7 short bed that I got rid of for the same reason,
plenty of power no load capacity
All most all the SRW trucks you see with a over head camper are over weight. If there pulling a trailer then for sure.
Sounds like you had your mind made up before you started the thread😂

This is what happens when broski chimes in late 🤣

What ever i did was going to be a compromise, since i can't run duals and i need to be short bed.

Interesting on the inboard coil comment - makes perfect sense.

Matt, what trim is the truck? I never considered Dodge, but I was entertaining only the Ram vs the Ford in my research.

I hope you like your new truck. Personally I will never own a Chrysler product. I don't care how good the motor is.

You'll like the Dodge. I had my second gen 6spd, quad cab long bed for 21 years. Only reason I sold it is b/c someone offered me too much money. I replaced it with 2014 3500 6spd, crew cab, long bed. I don't like training wheels. Good luck with your truck.
