Are the calipers the same for the pre-8/92 and post-7/92 rear disk brakes. My 80 I think has the earlier type with smaller (311 mm dia) rotors. I believe the later ones have a far bigger (about 330 mm?) rotor.

As discussed in this thread, if you have an early (pre 1994) HDJ81, finding rear brake parts can be a challenge. Backing plates and rotors are no longer produced, making replacements extremely pricey. When my rear rotors needed replacement, I opted to convert my early HDJ81 to 1994 FZJ80 rear brakes. Here’s a complete list of the part numbers involved, including what can be reused and what needs to be replaced.

Note: Be sure to get parts for the FZJ80 and not the FJ80! One parts store gave me a few FJ80 parts. These were for drum brakes and the parts definitely don’t fit!

Note: Supposedly calipers are the same, but mine were shot, so I opted for new calipers and cannot confirm that early HDJ81 calipers will work on 1994 FZJ80 rotors.

Once you have all the parts, crack open your FSM and follow the instructions for:
  1. Removing the old calipers and rotors
  2. Removing the parking brake shoes and bellcrank assemblies
  3. Removing the axle shafts and hubs (now is a perfect time to replace/re-grease wheel bearings and change out diff oil)
  4. Removing the brake backing plates
Installation is the reverse of disassembly. The FSM provides all the torque specs and more detailed instructions for things like preloading the wheel bearings. Swapping out the brake components is actually really simple. By far the most difficult part of this job is removing the axle half-shafts and then getting all the bearings repacked/adjusted.

At the end, don't forget to bleed the brakes and then bed them.

My 1992 HDJ81 has disk brakes in the rear, does anybody knows the OEM parts numbers for the brake pads?

The OEM part number for HDJ81 rear brake pads is 04466-60020.

Per Toyota Parts Deal, they fit 80 series land cruisers from 1992-1997, but the same pads were used on my 1990 HDJ81. These pads should work for any 80 series with rear discs.

Rear pads and calipers the same for hdj81 early 1991-1997

Difference is the rotor and hand brake including backing plates assembly only for early 1991-1992 ish.

Call 4Wheel Auto in Edmonton as they probably have the parts.
