Spent the weekend on Cape Lookout (southern section of the Outer Banks, NC). No paved roads and over 20miles of 4WD accessible beach. Went with a local Land Cruiser club so the GX had some good company.

LOVE the OBs. Ive been scheming on an Ocracoke island trip for a while now.
Okracoke is great. Plenty of beach to drive on and the little town and marina is nice with good bars and restaurants.

Are there interior trails on the island? Or just beach wheeling.
Ocracoke has 1 paved highway down the middle from hatteras ferry to the town and marina. The beach is accessible by several ramps off that road.
Cape lookout has an interior track along with the entire length of beach.

Got temporarily adopted by a bunch of Jeeps and had an amazing time a couple of weekends ago. My GX (aka Silverback) got dubbed "Grey Poupon" by the group and my family made sure to teach them how to drink with their pinkies up when we stopped. I found the "GX Poupon" patch on etsy added it to the headliner for posterity.
😂

Really special to see the sunrise on Lake Huron and then take trails and two-tracks across Michigan to see the sunset on Lake Michigan. The fall colors were amazing! And, as an added bonus, my boys had such a good time they didn't ask for their tablets once the whole trip. Parenting win!

Koni lift with 1.75” in front and 1.5” in back. Dealer installed. 2 alignments since and I still don’t think it’s right.

that's a bummer. should not have an issue with suspension geometry with that small of a lift - maybe it's tire related?

Did you measure the lift before and after or are you just going off the company’s numbers? I’ve found most will lift you more than reported, especially until it settles, or sometimes doesn’t.
Also some aftermarket UCAs are a good bet.

Your point about, "...until it settles." is so often missed by folks new to suspension lifts.
This is very important because not only will the height settle and drop maybe a half inch or so, but the ride will also become smoother.
This is especially noticeable when loading up your rig for an outing and actually adding the weight the springs were intended for!
Since my rig is almost completely outfitted all the time, my ride is always very comfortable. I think even better than stock!

Looks awesome. I planned all winter for my OBX trip to cape lookout last year and got cancelled by a late spring nor’easter. Glad you made it out, props to you because it’s not a simple trip to plan and execute 🫡

I had to coach my Lexus dealer mech through the alignment with some YouTube videos. Problem I had at Firestone was they wouldn’t accept imperfect camber to reach a moderate caster. And they have to do more work to achieve this than your regular old alignment they charge $165 for less than a half hour. They even had to test drive mine and come back and correct. At least I got my money’s worth 😂
I couldn’t find a reliable alignment shop in my area for lifted vehicles but this would have been my preference for sure.

These were my numbers on second try fyi drives pretty well, still wish for a bit more stability than i have but I think it’s a decent compromise. Tires have 20k miles on them and they’re wearing quite evenly.

My last alignment in new tires was great, drove awesomely.
I got about 65k miles on bfg ko2s, LRE (5-tire rotation q 5,000mi).

New tires and alignment a couple Months ago, now it's a bit twitchy with the steering. Feels like the caster is too steep, doesn't seem to track well... 🤔

I admit I don't know the details well enough (as you allude to), and I've seen info for steps to align a GX well, but didn't read to understand it.

I paid for 'aligemt of lifted vehicle' (barely lifted), and assume the tire shop in Moab knows what they're doing...

BUT it doesn't drive as well as last time... 🤷‍♂️

And I'm not sure I have the alignment spec sheet. ☹️

Your post prompts me to educate myself.

So I turned it around at the bottom of the hill, with the sun setting and a storm rolling in. We picked up the pace on the way back, but I had to stop for pics a couple of times.

So I turned it around at the bottom of the hill, with the sun setting and a storm rolling in. We picked up the pace on the way back, but I had to stop for pics a couple of times.

At the top of the trail there's a little extra credit that gave me a chance to exercise the transfer case and diffs.

Fun trip, but not the winter wonderland we were waiting for.
Looking at your dash nav, I believe we've done some "snow-wheel'n" around there also! Lots of fun and the best part, all the fun of mud but no mud to clean afterwards.

Yeah, this storm seems like it missed it's potential around these parts. I've been up there in serious blizzard conditions, but this one turned out much lighter than the forecasts had promised. Better luck next time.

There are great trails in the area, much more challenging than where we went. The reason I'd never driven that one in particular is because I'm usually in a 2wd car when I go up Mt. Piños where that trail starts. When I'm in the truck I go looking for more isolated spots, but this time I was looking for altitude, so it worked out. It was a Subaru caliber fire road, but my Civic wouldn't have made it. Just enough to quench my appetite for wheelin'.
