Hey All,

Decided to start a build thread on my FJ62. Picked this one up last week for a good price, 250k on the dash.

Good/Great:
  • Body has very little rust, just a few spots under back window and front rock chips
  • Body has no damage, so little to no bodywork anticipated.
  • Frame, almost no rust, little bit of surface rust on the rear leaf springs.
  • Rides really good
Bad/Needs work:
  • Confirmed the emissions guy wont even test it, smokes a tiny bit and smells.
  • Rear main leaks, and front too
  • Auto trans doesnt like to shift well, have to let off the throttle to shift up. I tried adjusting the kick down cable and the "party trick". Still sucks
  • Interior upholstery and plastics need help, as expected
    • Seat first, half the foam is gone
  • Shifter needs replacement handle and its very loose
    • Fixed as below
  • Speedometer doesnt work after last transmission service a year ago
Expected:
  • Brakes are ok, feels like my old jeep
  • Steering is loose ish, again feels like my old jeep

First order of business, removing the crusty ski rack.

Next was the sloppy transmission shifter. (if anyone has a source for a T-handle i would greatly appreciate it.

Ended up using the Hillman 882995 bushings. Had to lightly file the pivot shaft to get it to fit, then heavily file the OD of the bushings to get them in the truck.

Note you likely will have to cut them a little
Shorter also to sit flush. Cost about $13

Also went underneath and the bushings were shot there also

3d printed some out of ASA and that helped some, still some slop in the D holes, but I don’t think that’s fixable without the welded fix that’s on here.

Remember kids, when 3d printing, perimeter thickness trumps fill % every time.

Ran to the emissions shop, dude would even test it (don’t blame him). Engine is a bit smoky and smells. I think a V8 swap is sooner that I think

Lastly, I have been using a tracker app for tracking my progress. Trello breaking up all the stuff into sections. Seems to work well

You got options - I have a gently used 3fe+transmission for sale in the classifieds. But from what I hear, LS is the way to go.

Tiny update. Marker lamps were cracked and broken, new ones have arrived. I’ll probably wait till the body is painted to install? Not sure yet

Next one is the beginning of a controversial topic. De-chroming. I pulled the gutter trim partially to check for rust but mostly cause I’m not a chrome guy.

Small update, new hood bumpers cause the old ones were nonexistent

And the Amazon lift struts for the rear hatch, cause my head hurts from it dropping.

Also purchase parts to swap the front to struts, but not yet installed. I am debating what to do with all the parts like this and lights that will come out for paint anyway. Do you guys install everything and uninstall it later?

Also saw my dad this weekend and he showed me a photo of his old fj60! How cool, to bad he sold it years ago

I have a set I didn’t use when I swapped to a 5 speed on the 62. It was like $6 for all of them.

If anyone wants them, they can have them for shipping costs.

The OEM grey dashpad was still available from Toyota last year. I bought one from All American in ABQ, but had to paint it brown to match my truck. It will make a big difference in your truck and who knows when they will sell out.

That is for sure on the list to get, interior parts are being ordered slowly, as I want to get the drivetrain done first(ish, cause obviously I’m buying and installing crap cause I have little self control)

FJ80 rear wiper arm and 13” wiper “upgrade” installed. Needs the oem rubber boot still.

Still waiting on primer for my floor, UPS lost the same package 2x in a row from the vendor. 3rd time charm?

Am about to order a load of parts including the 80-series rear wiper for my 62. Any other parts needed besides the Wiper Arm (8524160011) and a blade to swap on 62?

Hi, Check fluid in transmission very carefully per manual. Small changes in fluid really effect these transmissions.if oil is not red, drop pan ,clean filter and put in new fluid. Transmission cable also wear from the inside.
