Is there a quick easy way to ID this FJ40 engine without crawling underneath it and digging around for numbers?

Looks like a 1.5F (late improved 1F) to me.

my WAG is a F145, oil filler still in the block, 1967?-1970?

Went to the way back machine.

On your engine over next to the coil just to the left, look down and you should see a “pad” just below the push rod cover. The info on that pad should help you decode.

Thank ypu guys. I appreciate it. I found the ”tag” and got the nbumbers…. I’ll see if I can decipher

the first four number on my “tag” are F3428 …… is that enough to tell what year and engine configuration I have?

So it looks like an F (serial number, last pic, but a clearer pic woukd help confirm), and your pic in post #8 looks like a date stamp of 70213 (???) which is Feb 13, 1970. In other words, the info that your seeking is marked on the motor but it’s hard for us to help out with unclear pics. If this is another owners rig looking to sell it just tell them you need very clear pics of those two areas. A very common courtesy that’s needed and not out of bounds for asking.
