You have to monkey with them. Drill out the bracket on one end and pull it from the old set of cylinders.

Edited for part numbers:

Gas Cylinders: 4138T579 Gas Spring with Ball-Joint End Fitting, 90 lb Force, 19.72" Extended Length, 7.87" Stroke
Nuts: 90257A045 Type 316 Stainless Steel Machine Screw Hex Nut, 5/16"-18 Thread Size, 9/16" Width, 7/32" Height, packs of 10

Probably the best thread to talk about how to do it:

Make sure it's what you want. My spoiler comes within 1mm of the roof when fully open. Any wind or flex will make it have slight contact.

Some guys have complained that they have full contact of the spoiler on the roof.

Thanks guys! I can probably handle that. Yes, I'll only be doing this mod if I have clearance issues with my slide-out Dometic CFX 75DZW. The spoiler may need to come off as it's currently within like 1mm of my Cruisin' full length roof rack.

I upgraded mine with aftermarket cylinders from McMaster Carr. It pushes it higher than OEM and does it in-10F. Costs a little more than OEM to convert, but well worth it to me. I like the extra height.

Hello. Wanted to know if the rear hatch hits the body since it lifts up higher. Need new rear shocks and thinking about the McMaster ones.

See my note in the middle of post #58. That sums it up.

Those work for short people with no lift.

I always hit my head on the damn thing!

The link is there, bottom pg 1. You can Lamazon or McMaster-Carr ‘em. ;)

Just replaced my rear hatch struts with the $26 A-Premium Amazon option.

For some reason, on cold mornings, the struts would never stay up. Too many head hits to count.

I should have done this years ago! This took all of 10 minutes with a 12mm wrench and reuses the two bolts on each side of the hatch.

Fun little tip, if you have the Maxsa Innovations Escaper Buddy Traction Mats, 2-pack, they do a great job of holding up the hatch while you're replacing the struts!

Are these the correct part #s for a '97?

McGeorge Toyota lists the following:

68960-60022 (Left, does not fit) --> 68950-60040 (Right, does fit a '97)

68960-60030 (Left, does fit a '97)

Thank you!

Late reply but for the next person looking.

RH 1/90-7/90 8x - 68950-60030 - NLA
LH 1/90-7/90 8x - 68960-60020 - NLA
RH 8/90-10/92 8x - 68950-60032 (Supercedes 68950-60031) - Avail in US
LH 8/90-10/92 8x - 68960-60022 (Supercedes 68960-60021)- Avail in US

But, the later model ones work on the 1/90-10/92 FJ80 and all year FZJ80 too:
RH: 68950-60040 - Avail in US
LH: 68960-60030 - Avail in US

The difference between the 8/90-10/92 and the later variants is super minor. Length is the same, bracket/fit are the same, etc. There are some slight variances on the strut tube body and the end linkage but nothing that prevents them from installing on any 1/90-10/92 as best I can tell.

The pair is available @ Cruiser Outfitter - Part# EXTSTR8XROEM. We also stock a high quality aftermarket kit, part# EXTSTR8XR
