Compression test says it’s toast. No reason to look any deeper.

Boo.

Nothing obvious with the HG. Maybe the head‘s compromised in 3-4-5 region? What’s number 5 piston look like?

Looks to me like it blew out between 4 and 5 but hey, I just put them in. I don’t know much else

Don’t know really. I got the old stuff scraped off the block and put a straight edge on the block and it looks good.

I’ll have the head checked before it goes back on for sure

I would never claim to be an expert on these things, I’ve had HGs replaced but never did one myself. If I stop learning things when I go to Mud posts then I’ll stop going to Mud posts. With that, it looks like HGs split apart when the head is pulled, there’s material left on both the block and the head? That’s why I thought there wasn’t an obvious failure, but maybe that discolored area between 4 and 5 is a failure. And does that failure cause the low compression numbers? (I’m still curious why I have good compression numbers on my rig but a lot of blowby). That’d be good if so, so it’s just a HG replacement job. GL, thanks for the detailed posts.

Knowing how all this went down and knowing the motor only has 1700 miles on it is how I came to head gasket.

1 and 6 show perfect compression.

I never let the truck heat up to make it steam up myself. It it had come back with good compression my plan was to run some Blue Devil head gasket repair into it and then drive it and see if it did OK.

With compression down across 4 cylinders it told me what I needed to know.

As for your motor. What’s considered good compression on a 60 year old motor?

Not exactly sure from the pix, but It doesn't look like a Toyota or OEM Head Gasket was used (61040 head)... Is that the case?

It was an OEM gasket

I couldn't imagine you wouldn't use the OE gasket, but I'm only asking because both the 61010 and 61030 OE gaskets would have copper rings around the oil galley passages and I don't see that in your pix, but I can't tell if the gasket is still on the block (in earlier pic), or it's just the separated remnants after removal. On cyl head, too... :meh:

It came all apart. It’s OEM because @RocketCityCrzrs tried to give me the non OEM one that was with the gasket kit when I picked up the motor

You were in my neck of the woods. Good luck getting her up and going again.

UPS decided they did not want to move around a 90# wooden box so we lost a couple of weeks in shipping this new head.

My carpenter helped me set it in the block yesterday so I spent the day putting Humpty Dumpty back together again.

I just fired it up briefly to make sure all is well.

Tomorrow I’ll add fluids and set the valves and hopefully send this guy back home this weekend

Got a good fluid flush into this thing. These funnels are clutch.

No leaks and it fired up perfectly. Valves are set.

We got a very nice break in the weather and I’ve been out driving today.

I wanted to see what RPM 80 mph was. That’s likely what was happening on the day the hose popped off. 3300 does not scare me for a few minutes but these motors like 3000 and less for long drives

Still running the same gears?

Still running the same gears?

I told him if he wanted to keep this up I’d have to regear it.

He’s all “man, I don’t know if I can trust it now”

I told him you can trust it fine if you don’t drive it 75-80 for 7 hours

Wow! Aren’t these made to just cruise around and show off and get a little dirt on tires once in awhile 😎😂

It sounds like he needs a Jeep.
