As far as taxes go, i actually don't mind gas taxes and other use taxes. Pay to play. Each state has different priorities, so the tax will be different.
What is wrong/immoral/crooked/corrupt is property taxes. I buy a car or house with after tax money and then the man says I have to pay a tax every year on some perceived unrealized value, or they'll take it away from me or not let me use it. So do I own it? Feels like I don't. But I paid for it, with money that was already taxed? What is going on here? And why should the value of my house matter? A single guy that lives in a $300k house uses FAR less government services than the family of 4 living next to him in a $200k house. So you're 'punished' for owning a house that is worth more while at the same time using less of the services that property taxes pay for.
It's a scam and downright wrong. What is more baffling is that the public voted for it and continues to allow it to happen.
