As far as taxes go, i actually don't mind gas taxes and other use taxes. Pay to play. Each state has different priorities, so the tax will be different.

What is wrong/immoral/crooked/corrupt is property taxes. I buy a car or house with after tax money and then the man says I have to pay a tax every year on some perceived unrealized value, or they'll take it away from me or not let me use it. So do I own it? Feels like I don't. But I paid for it, with money that was already taxed? What is going on here? And why should the value of my house matter? A single guy that lives in a $300k house uses FAR less government services than the family of 4 living next to him in a $200k house. So you're 'punished' for owning a house that is worth more while at the same time using less of the services that property taxes pay for.

It's a scam and downright wrong. What is more baffling is that the public voted for it and continues to allow it to happen.

NH is an almost purely property tax state. When I lived in other states that taxed everything, I resented property taxes too. Now that that is it. I really like it. I don’t get penalized for earning more. I can choose what town I live in and what I want my tax rate to be. I have two kids in school. I pay a ton of property taxes, but it’s the best school system in the state. I’m getting what I pay for. When they graduate, I’ll sell and go someplace else.

But what about the people that don't have kids or have kids out of school? I understand the need for good schools, but the fact that if I don't pay property taxes on my house the man can take it?!?! Wtf. I paid for this man.

Just gonna move huh? Gonna make huge life decisions cause of the broken tax system? Know how lame that is? Moving is expensive too. And not an option for most.

You really want to be pissed about taxes, consider this.

The United States has been impounding "super" yachts of Russian Oligarchs. One of the largest in the world just sailed into Hawaii after being held in a legal battle. While these boats are in possession of the USA, We The People are paying for the maintenance and storage. I read that the one ship mentioned above will cost about $25,000,000.00 per year to keep up maintenance alone.

That is actually how most people do it. Buy into town when your kids are school aged. Sell and move to an adjacent, lower tax town when they’re done. Clearly these are broad stroke comments many stay put in one place or another.
Schools, cops, FD, etc. need some funding source. What I like about the system here is, you can choose the level of taxes/services you desire and since it is nearly 100% local property taxes, you can-in the most literal sense- have your voice heard at town meeting.

I understand schools and police need funding.

I'll pay.

But why is the value of my house tied to what I pay? What if I don't have kids? Why does the family with kids pay less than me because they have a crappier house? They use more AND pay less. Even if they make more money than me. .What kind of broken system is that? Oh, and you don't pay? They'll come take your house, even though you paid for it. With money you already paid multiple taxes with. And hard working home owning tax paying people voted for it? That's the craziest part. We really are super stupid.

Oh! And maybe the even stupider part is that people with kids pay less taxes! Gotta end that child tax credit. Kids use tax paid services too....someone besides me should pay for that.

I say we all pay the same amount. Figure out what the maximum the lowest income person can pay, and we all pay that. Everyone. no freeloaders . And adjust government spending accordingly.

All fair points
I’m not really advocating for one system over another, merely pointing out that what I used to resent, now I don’t mind because of the way it is integrated into the system up here. It works for me. Perhaps because I have 2 kids, And I am a user of the services.

Yeah. I own a few properties in Texas and I get raped in property taxes every year from my home state.
So I don’t even care about NC taxes. They are nothing compared to texas.

I call my NC house home. Compared to a full time SC resident, I get hosed on property taxes on my SC place because it’s not my main residence. Like double a resident. I don’t fuxking care. I want to own the place. I don’t want to live there. I’ve also accepted that if there’s a fire it’ll burn down before the volunteers even get to the station which is 9 miles away down twisty 30mph roads. I’m still fine paying taxes on it even tho that’s literally the only county service I’ll ever possibly use.

People can choose where to own property and where to live. We can choose where we work and what we do. No excuse to complain if you don’t like the rules unless you’ve never done anything to try to change them. Most people never will but they’ll still bitch.

Gawddamn John. Every once in a while you come out swinging and remind why I like you so much.

We own two other properties beside our homestead. The taxes are like John describes. To me it is part of doing business. Taxes are part of the game, they are not going away. I pretty much count on them going up. BUT!!!!! There are ways to lower your taxes and it takes work, which is time. It is business so time is factored into the total cost and or savings. Some times it is worth the hassle to fight to lower the tax base, other times it just is not worth the time you will have to invest.

I find property taxes on new vehicles appalling. Part of the reason the newest vehicle I own is an 02. I still stand behind my comment on a better accountant. The tax laws are beyond complex. Not knowing how to use their system to your best advantage is a disservice to your own financial future.

Wait a second!!!!!!

Isnt that socialism? Everyone put into a pot and everyone benefits even if you dont need it. Welcome to the new old era. Before everyone worked and contribute to the pool and nobody even thought about bringing that up. Now that is so many people living of the system it hurts. Taxes in general work and i dont mind paying them. The problem is seen your taxes spent in crap that doesn’t benefit anyone and make people lazy. I saw it happened, and you guys have seen it happened in other countries but no one learns from others people mistake. It is sad that Colombia saw what happened with Venezuela, suffer with all the migration of people and still elect a left win president that kill and rape so many people.

You rich people and your problems...... I need to go get my refrigerator box home, is blowing with the wind and I dont want to move.

I mostly agree. I have zero issue with paying my fair share of taxes. The problem is when the money is wasted on things that seemingly benefit no one.

The challenge is the non tax payers voting. They are close to out numbering the tax payers. How about bring a w2 and you can vote? I know, blah blah, somebody's feelings get hurt. The issue is non tax payers voting in their buddies to benefit none tax payers.

Next subject, Roe vs Wade being overturned. This is concerning as a dad of 2 daughters. I believe it is always up to the woman no matter what . I believed that before 2 daughters. Period. How can we as a country even think we get to tell a human what to do with their body? I guess if men got pregnant, abortions would be A OK. Please help me understand how this being overturned helps this country move forward. It feels like we just went back 45 years or more.

We didn't go back ...we moved forward. The federal US constitution doesn't gurantee or outlaw abortion..so.it's a state issue. Just like everything else that the US constitution doesn't cover. It's on purpose. The Feds have limited power and the people in the respective states get to choose.

Now we are moving back to that. Want abortion to be easy and legal? Vote for it.

The constitution doesn't cover bank robbery either but it is still governed under federal law.

This (abortion) is an extremely complex issue, probably better discussed in the Chat forum rather than here in our club forum.

It's the rant thread - people can rant about whatever the **** they want to - others just have to choose if they want to see the drivel or not.... :)

I just got up early so I could drive 7 hours to be at a beach vacation (I'm not a beach person for the record) with my wife to get to a condo that had a time lock that won't let me in. It's hot, humid and raining (9h and its supposed to rain the whole time we are here). I just want to drink beer and piddle in my shop. I hate people, crowds and sand, so the beach in Florida just before the 4th is going to check all my boxes....

How's that for a pivot.

I just needed to b!tch and I can't to my wife who loves the beach and is happy to be here, well probably will be once the door is able to be opened.
