Kurt, will these (specifically the Overdrive set, TCG8690OD) work in conjunction with 3:1 low gears (TCG869031)?
Could one have their high speed and low speed cake, eat it too, and for the same money as the 3.3:1 and 4:1 kits? I'm guessing there's a reason this isn't offered as a kit already, seems like it would be really popular?

Yes, we have been able to combine a few gear sets to accomplish this. It is technically in our system (TCG869030) but not on any public facing data. I'll need to revisit and verify the application and fitment if your interested in ordering.

I’m planning to do both UD and Low range on my 80 with 185k miles. I’ll be paying someone to do this work for me.

Do you recommend replacing all the bearings while the transfer case is all open, too?

I assume replacing all seals is a given

Not that $500 more is nothing, but doing the same job twice ends up being a lot more in the long run.

Absolutely, it's the exact time to do bearings and seals!

The bearings were a few weeks out from Toyota when we replaced the ones in my friend's 80.
Valley Hybrids was in driving distance and we were lucky they had some on hand. BTW if you are looking for someone to do the work Valley Hybrids is the first place I would go.
Cruiser Outfitters has been expanding their T-case parts line for quite awhile so they may have them.

Yes, of course we have the bearings, you can also read about our many t-case kits and parts here in this same Cruiser Outfitters forum.

We offer bearings in both in complete kits and individual seals and bearings. We've been selling t-case parts and full rebuild kits for 30 years now. We were selling these kits to many of the folks now selling kits before they were in business ;)

For example the 1992-1997 HF2AV rebuild kit, available for immediate purchase here:

We also have used parts and complete cases for pre-built options.

For those who have installed underdrive gears into the FJ60 split case - how is the gear wine noise?

@cruiseroutfit have you had any customers comment on the noise of the 3.3:1 split case set you sell? I'm planning to purchase them from you and hoping for re-assurance that the noise level is tolerable.

Any underdrive/overdrive is going to have some gear lash noise. Most never mention it but we definitely have had some that note it. Not bad enough to pull them out but noted.

Hi Kurt,

Just to check you can fit in the underdrive kit and the 3.13 lo range transfer kit to a 2001 V8 100 Series (Full time 4wd)?

It mentions on your site that you need an extra part, but that seems to link to a bearings and seals kit? My 100 only has 62k miles on it, and its had a pretty easy life, so don't really want to swap out all the bearings and seals unless i absolutely have to.

Also- there aren't many toyota gearing specialists in the UK (to be accurate there aren't any i don't think)- how hard is to regear a transfer case? I'm ok with splitters and pullers, but struggle with the accuracy to measure backlash etc

Many thanks,

James

No backlash settings in TCase, just a bearing preload, easily done with shims, micrometer and a calculator. If you have access to a press, TCase work is pretty straight forward. Marlin Crawler website has a great step by step for the crawler gear. They do it without pulling TCase just back half, I would recommend pulling TCase. Not sure what the experts would say, if you are not changing bearings if you need to redo bearing preload.

Yes, you can fit either the OD or UD to the high range and/or the low range gears in a 100/470 full-time 4WD case. You need an additional fit kit (part# TCG9807HRKIT which is currently shown on the website yet). I'm not sure what bearing/seal kit you're referring to.

It's hard to convey familiarity and ability to overhaul or install gears. I'd recommend taking a look at the job in the factory service manual. It does require measuring shim and clip thicknesses and being comfortable with the overall disassembly and assembly of the cases. It's time consuming but nothing super technical imo. Hope that helps!

Thanks Kurt- i must be getting something wrong, but when i search for that part number on your website it goes to a $550 transfer case rebuild kit? should it be going to something different?

It's just finding the closest match based on the search inquiry. As the site mentions, you have to call until we get it loaded on the site.

As the site indicates, you need to call to order until we get it on the new site. We have 5000+ products still to add and that kit is quite low volume compared to others so it's in the que.

Wish I knew you carried the TC rebuild kit, back in 2018 when I installed the crawler gear, took awhile to get those parts, along with a TC oil pump and bearing shims from Toyota.

Yup, we've had them for many years

I have 4.56 diffs already. Would there be any advantage to running the 10% underdrive kit for my 97 FZJ80 with 35's?

Do you like your high range gearing now or wish you had a bit more gear for get up & go?

I'd like some more get up and go for sure. What kind of total gear ratio would that be?

It would definitely help. You'd have the equivalent of 5:1.

Doesn't seem like there are many out there replacing the bearings when doing the low range gear swap, is everyone just finding it unnecessary?
I have done low range on my 100 and a friend's 80 and didn't like the look of a couple of bearings in each of them so replaced them. Also mine had some scoring of the oil pump so replaced it as well. How many miles you have, doing seals?
