When do you pull the glass?

Soon, we left it in as long as possible because we only have four bays. That generally means we got to cycle Cruisers around but now that it is bare metal, it won’t be outside unless we are working on it.

He is where we finished today.

So now that we have been stripping the Cruiser for a few days we have a better feel for condition of the body. We knew there were a few spots of rust but with the crappy repaint I was expecting some bondo. There is none. Not only that I was expecting some soccer mom body rash, aka parking lot dings from shopping carts, pillars at the gas stations and so forth. There really is none of that either. Other than a couple really small rust spots this body is in really nice condition and has never been in an accident.

Body sides are done from the windows down so we started in on the roof.

There was a couple tiny rust spots here but they sanded right out.

Both top corners of the windshield frame have a rust spot. I think we will just cut these out and patch because the corrosion is a little deep. Otherwise windshield frame is stellar.

A couple more progress pics.

Nice work! What do you find is the best way to handle stock roof rack holes, 25-30 years later?

Not sure what you mean “to handle” but if I get you, weld them up.

One of these days im planning to sound proof the inside. Could you tell me a rough estimate of how much ill need to do the flooring?

I don’t know exactly on floor only but whole Cruiser up to the windows is about 100-110sqft.

That's good enough for me. Thanks.

The last few days we had to finish up this 77-series.

We did weld up the RR holes yesterday.

I think tomorrow we will start taping and perhaps fix the two rust spots in the windshield frame before primer.

Cheers

All taped off and ready to go.

As long as our painter can get to it tomorrow it will be in primer by the end of the day.

Cheers

Man, that looks like a lot of work but doing it right! Almost seems like if it didn't have the dynamat you could have just dunked the entire body into a giant pool of paint. lol

You know I seem to recall some outfit doing that. Don't think it was paint though; can't recall. May have been a car manufacturer...

I think I watched a documentary on the Porsche factory and they do that. They like roll the body through a bath.

back when i used to help build race cars, we sent the stripped tubs for an acid bath. cleans off all the paint, factory seam sealer, bondo, etc. only problem is neutralizing the acid that makes it into various voids and cavities

but yea, manufacturers dip the tubs in various baths for corrosion protection. paint gets applied by robot arms. cool stuff.
