I got a text today from a German I know who's currently in Tunisia, headed to Mali. Proof positive that you don't need to buy one of everything at the Overland Expo or at the 4x4 store to outfit your truck for "overlanding", you just need to go. Here's his rig:

Everything you need in a nice, compact package. Doesn't draw undue attention in Africa, since there's thousands of old trucks like this there. The truck is a BJ75 that's sitting on 60-series axles. The wheels are 16x6 from a poverty-spec 80 series. Tires are 255/85R16. The original 3B 4 cylinder n/a diesel has been swapped for a 12H-T straight 6 turbo diesel. I saw this truck last time I was in Germany--it's a beast. Great in the dunes and perfect for crossing Africa.

Here they are on the road:

Pretty sweet barn-door 60-series, too. I'm jealous. Makes me want to go to Africa.

I have an absolute minimalist build in my 200 and I find I enjoy it more than my over built and overly complex 100 for long distance travel. Heated and pressurized shower not working? Oh wait, I don’t have one of those. Blue tooth enabled power management system app on the fritz? Dont have that either.

I like how these folks travel.

There is a beauty in simplicity👍

The only problem that I see is the destination .
Mali once a beautiful and very peaceful country , has become like all Sahel countries quite dangerous .
You risk kidnapping or worst .
I accept a certain grade of risk traveling , but won’t like to be caught in a fight .

Especially since unless you are in the USA you certainly will be unarmed. Have had friends that encountered punks more than once in South America that had blocked roads, armed with knives that were demanding money to pass thru. No THANKS! We have enough third world culture here already, look at ANY US city, you would think you were in a 3rd world country! Thanks to Socialist, anti American agenda and NO protection of our borders. MAJOR problem here in Arizona. Still better chance of being “safe” here in USA.
