Let's swap a motor and do some other stuff to a 60.... (1 Viewer)

The 60 got to be a shop truck today.....took it to go pick this thing up at the alignment shop. Kind of funny......we started the 60 project the same time we started the McLaren build....today they were both on the road for the first time....out of the safety of the roads around the shop :)

The 60 kept up with the McLaren no prob. Kind of.

And....for the first time in it's 293,336 miles.....she got a fill up with this stuff.

Been a few weeks since I updated this.....busy with paying customer projects but still tinkering with the 60.

Minor stuff.....played around with adding some better front speakers. My truck had some old component stuff that was bothering me. Thought I'd do a 5 1/4" speaker like others have. Would have been easy. Somehow I don't like easy.

This is what I was going to go with

This is what I went with....6.5" JBL GTO shallow mount speaker. I run these in our other trucks and I think they sound really good in them. Had a set so I figured I would try to make them work. They are almost exactly as deep as the Kickers....very very shallow.

We think whoever installed the speakers before used a piranha to cut the metal on the doors :)
Look at this mess.

So we cleaned the hacked up speakers holes........had to get them opened for the 6.5" speakers. Also had to use a hammer and dolly to flatten out some of the sheetmetal so the speaker could mount nice and flat.

Installed. NOT proud about how we had to install these.....goes against everything we do :)

We have been sealing up our doors with both panels for the big areas and straight sound deadener for the small ones.

I remember a stereo guy who worked for me would just slap on sound deadener on the whole door closing all the holes. Great idea that ended up being a really bad idea when you had to work on the door. Unless of course you like dealing with butyl all over everything.

Our method works WAY better.

We usually always make new vapor barriers for the doors. One of the better tricks I read about somewhere was to use clear shower curtain liners for vapor barriers....the beauty of using the clear is that you can trace the pattern you want with a Sharpie on the material then cut it out. Works perfect every time. We use butyl to stick them on.

This was one of our 79s doors.....didn't get any pics of the 60's doors.

I disliked my cold side intercooler pipe.....looked awkward......so I built a new one. Way better. Now I need to figure out a color for them. Maybe we'll play with some Cerakote on them :)

Finished up our hood strut kit....had the cowl supports cut and bent. Getting ready to put kits together next week.....we've been waiting on hardware to get re-stocked. We like using yellow cad stuff.

Turned out great :)

After years of searching, I think I finally found the perfect headlight......ones that don't look goofy but pump out serious light.

These are from Holley.....I believe they are made by Morimoto which has been in the lighting game a long time. Holley RetroBright lights....available in round and square. They come in cool white, warm white and amber. I went with 7" round cool white.

We've used all kinds of lights over the years.....these seem to have the right optics and look 100% like a halogen headlight. So a little different than popping LED bulbs in a Hella or Euro style light and certainly different than the more modern style LEDs. Pretty sure I'm in love with them :)

I had no idea these headlight existed. I'm using the OEM Toyota upgrade kit and it's good, but I'm betting the holley units are better. One of my biggest peeves with almost all the the LED's available is that they just look too modern and high tech to look right in the 60. The holley ones look perfect though.

I didn't know they existed either. I'm guessing they are pretty new. I've had some square ones on order for a 62 build and we still haven't seen those.

Not real sure how I came across these lights but I'm glad I did(and we're a Holley dealer so they were easy to get). I kind of wish I would have bought the warm white ones.....I think they would have looked a little better on the truck. In any event, I'm thrilled I don't have to have LED looking lights on the truck....they look so out of place on these trucks in my opinion.

Just looked at these online as an upgrade for my 62. This seems like a great option but $180 per bulb felt a little steep. Am I seeing that right?

Unfortunately you're seeing that correctly :(

Been putting miles on the 60.....really liking this thing. The power of the 1HZ turbo is impressive.....no more getting passed by EVERYONE.....this truck goes. Excellent power delivery.....sounds cool too. Hoping to top off the tank this weekend so I can check MPGs. Thinking it will probably be pretty good. Certainly better than the old worn out 2F.

I need to re-do my exhaust.....I feel like I am getting a lot of vibrations thru the body/frame. My other trucks feel way smoother....so we'll keep this exhaust inside the frame and get it out back. I think the side pipe WITH the muffler is a lot of weight to have out that far....some kind of weird vibrations going on. Not so sure another flex joint will do much. We'll come up with something cool.

Added a Specter Off Road dash cover to try and protect this dash.....even with the tinted windshield I figured keeping the heat and sun off it would be a good idea. Looks pretty cool too :)

Filled up my first tank....well topped it off actually. 226 miles(corrected for 13% speedo error)....used 14.2 gallons so 15-ish or so miles per gallon. Certainly not anything to write home about BUT(maybe though....compared to a 2F it's incredible :) )....this was all stop and go and I was driving it like I stole it everywhere. It's too fun not to. With a more thrifty right foot....I'm guessing an easy 17 in town. I've never checked mileage on my 79 pickup with the 1HZ turbo. Guessing about the same. Again, another one that gets driven easy.

Had some of the 60's buddies out the other day....even the old dog 1959 FJ25 made an appearance. Remarkable old truck.

And maybe one of my favorite things......I bought an old dirty tool bag with all the tools in it, cleaned it in my ultrasonic cleaner(bag and tools) and stuffed it under the seat. I can rest easy now :)

Anyone know if there is a rubber band hold down thing for the 60s? Thought I read that a late FJ40 one fit.

Very disappointed in that dog. I thought her loyalties were with the 70 Series. 😊
Nope.....zero loyalties....as long as there is food at the end of the drive, that's what matters :)

Quick update......I have not driven another truck since the last update. I'm in unchartered waters......I've never driven something this long without mixing in another one. Pretty safe to say, I'm in love with this truck. It's perfect. It's so good, it's going to make me do something with a 1HDT and manual in an FJ80 I have stashed away. Might get me to stop driving the 60 :)

Popped this little speedo correction piece in today....fixed the 13% error in my speedo. Came from Commercial Speedometer. Hit 75 mph on the way home tonight without really trying too hard. Going to try for 90 tomorrow :)
