Let's swap a motor and do some other stuff to a 60.... (1 Viewer)

Sounds sooo good, nice job. Your shop is amazing too
Thanks...it's a cool shop. Confusing for customers when there are mega exotics being worked on next to Land Cruisers. I love seeing the looks on their faces.

Had a few hours in between jobs today so we started in on the aux gauges. Little bit of work to get them in. Lots of wiring to run and stuff to plan out. All the sensors were in(except for the outside air temp).

This is most of the stuff....sensors are in the truck already but this stuff is what makes those sensors work. There's a Dakota Digital tach adapter back there too....we'll need to get my tach working. Fortunately this motor has an injection pump with a tach signal coming out. Should make life a little easier. I hope.

The super cool 3D printed ashtray insert. Can't wait to get this thing working tomorrow....it's going to look great in the truck.

These 3 little buttons are used to toggle thru the various pages, reset things and change the display look. We put them on the bottom of the steering column cover. Smart place for them.

EGT sensor routing.....clean.

Outside air temp sensor. I don't know why I'm so enthralled by outside air temp readings.....especially in FL....it's hot and hotter :)

Here's how the bezel where the AC and other stuff goes look.....clean

Started on the exhaust system today. Really simple exhaust. Down, out, down the rocker, out the side. Easy. All stainless....I'll decide on whether or not I'll ceramic coat it to match the turbo and exhaust. Most likely some of it will get coated.

Using an Aero Exhaust Turbine XL....3030. 3" in and out. I have them on the other diesels...really nice sounding and flowing.

Here's the midpipe in progress......a little more welding tomorrow and this will be good. I hate this type of flex going....I like to use a ball and socket but we used our last one on a different project. Got this one instead. It will be fine. I was debating on using it at all. Pretty sure stock 1HZ exhausts don't have flex joints. I read something about flex joints being used to protect things like catalytic converters from vibrations.

Too much time welding, not enough petting the dog judging by this face.

Had our buddy down the street turn one of our hood strut brackets into some kind of file that the laser cutter guys can use to pop these out.....then they bend them. We'll get them back, clean them, prep, powder coat and then sell them to lots of 60 series owners who don't want to deal with a prop rod again :)

A much better version than the prototype I built :) Our buddy had us fab this up from his file and then he put it in his brake so we could get the bend radius stuff right for final production.

Can you post a link to that digital gauge readout? Looks like a pretty cool gadget.

I wonder if something like this could get a signal from my Holley Sniper? I love the Sniper, but I really hate the screen. But I also like knowing the info when I'm driving.

The system we use is a really cool setup. It takes a bit of work to make it work though. We had about a day and 1/2 doing this install between the sensor installs, mounting the components and wiring. It's very involved. We mounted this setup on a plate that went up under the dash where the speaker grill is. Fit perfect, clears the glove box and we shouldn't have to access it ever again

Full system mounted on the plate. The round thing is for the speaker which goes off for certain alarms.

Opening screen....

This is my preferred screen....I like the larger boost and EGT readings. These are constant. The 2 below them can be toggled thru with the buttons under the column.

Some other screens.....there are so many options. We have a pretty good file that we use to set them up.

We won't be using RPM or anything to do with speed on this install. One of my trucks shows RPM and speed but I think that is because it had a more modern cluster. They offer a pickup and sensor for the driveshaft to take readings.

This is pretty cool so I thought I'd share. Guess it could go in a FJ62 :)

It's a H150 5 speed for a 3F in an 80. Pretty rare piece.....I think they were only around for a year and a few months and in a few markets. What's really cool is that it has an adapter plate to mount it to the 3F(E). Impossible to find but I got lucky. This one supposedly came out of Japan 20 years ago connected to a 3F......it was said to be a test setup. Who knows.

This will be going in a really clean 91 FJ80. Going to be nice to have a 5 speed behind that 3FE. Pedal stuff coming in from Dave at Japan 4x4. I will grab the shifter boot and shifter(need an LHD shifter lever...the one I got with this is RHD). The ONLY thing I won't have is the center console but that should be easy to build I think. We will use the OEM console and make a nice bezel for it.

Running really low on stuff to do....tomorrow is tuning on the injection pump to dial that in. There's a weird harmonic in the fan shroud that I need to fix....going to do some foam or rubber insulators between the shroud and the radiator.

We redesigned the exhaust....eliminated the flex joint. I have a ball and socket style flex joint we will use...same as we use on the other trucks. Gives a little flex and good sealing. I should have used one from the beginning.

Made a removable tip....easier to get the exhaust in and out thru the spring.

Nice and tight....sounds good too.

Some elaborate brackets. Never got a pic of them installed. Maybe tomorrow I'll crawl under there. We use OEM Toyota rubber insulators for our exhausts so the brackets get a little interesting to fit them.

I got burned on my first gas to diesel swap by the fuel cap......I used the gas one and it wasn't vented(fancy OEM locking one). Well the truck would run great and then just crap out. Super frustrating because I had no idea why the fuel was running out....no leaks, no issues....just no fuel. I'd prime the filter and it would fire up. Really had me bummed out. A buddy came by and said I should leave the cap off and drive it. Well sure enough, the truck was perfect. Never even crossed my mind about the cap. Almost got me on this one but then I remembered. And I had a cool diesel cap :)

Changed over to this one on the 60. Vented.

The before pic....filthy.

Finished up my floor mats.....cheated on the rear. Used the FJ62s OEM rear mat to make a pattern.

Man, stripes bring a cool vintage vibe to these trucks!

Honestly, Chris, there aren't many with the collective talent you've assembled. To be able to improve and modernize a 60-series' drivability and functionality to this level without compromising anything that's already great about a 60 is, well, rare.

What a classy build from a really cool shop!

Thanks for the kind words.....there's a lot of guys out there doing amazing stuff....we just do our thing. Fortunate to be able to do what we do.

And for sure the stripes feel right :)

Little things like this are what make these projects fun.....stock tach working with the 1HZ :)

We used an Autometer diesel tach adapter to generate a signal off the alternator....that goes into a Dakota Digital tach interface....and now we have a working tach. Not the cleanest setup but it works. The tach response feels a little slow to me and it's probably not dialed in perfectly but it's close....
20220427_160847.jpeg

You can barely see it mounted on the alternator. We blacked out the band clamp to hide it. Obviously trimmed the long end too.
20220427_173108.jpeg

Stashed the Autometer piece to the side of the dash...
20220428_111411_04.jpeg

The Dakota Digital box is down in the corner of the dash. Lots of stuff on this truck in this corner. This unit is Bluetooth connected so you adjust it on your phone. Kind of cool. We also supplied a tach signal to my aux gauges.

Our exhaust hanger brackets.....these will come off, get cleaned up and powder coated....quickly painted them so I could go for a test drive :)

I like using existing holes instead of drilling frames for stuff like this.
