BJ73 broke on me tonight. First drive after a month of non-use due to heater fan being broken and waiting on parts. .................Fuel starvation.. Filter is less than 5000 miles old and I have an electric pump pushing fuel to the filter. I'll make a loop in the line tomorrow and see where the clog/problem is. It may be time to drop the tank/drain and clean. No reason for a good filter to clog so quick unless something like algae is in the tank.
Considering future engine swaps. I know there are alot of opinions on this. I care about cost, simplicity, and repairability as well as driving good enough to make it worthwhile. Sort of the dream swap for me would be a swap to a mercedes OM603 or 606 to keep it diesel, but that's a complex swap with a $3K+ engine and uncommon or have to fabricate adapter plate...... I could go to a non-electronic gas 4.3 GM v6 using a common chevy to Toyota adapter plate and use a sub $1500 engine. Probably loose 3-4 mpg compared to the 3B diesel(but cheaper fuel). Gain the complexity of spark ignition, but go with a marine intake manifold and carburetor for simplicity.
I really love diesels, but I think a 4.3 V6 with 200hp would weigh 200lb less and be a dramatic increase in performance and driveability as well as an easy fit for the engine bay. A young guy recently said to me in regards to engine swaps: "LS swaps make alot of sense, but noone wants to talk about that".. Meaning I guess "toyota purists people" don't like the idea. Well from a performance per dollar/ass pain LS swap rates high, but that engine is overkill in a 73 I think.
I'm not serious yet about any of this yet, just kicking Ideas around. I'm sort of questioning why I'm sticking with a smoky, underpowered, innefficient diesel that gets me 20mpg at best that I must watch the guages to make sure I don't burn it up at highway speed.

I would not do a 4.3. I’ve driven a couple 4.3 swaps and they are OK. Why do all the work for a Chevy V8, but get much less power?

A bone stock 73 is still around 4600lbs so not like it’s going to be seriously overpowered. Stick a 5.3 vortec in it if you want to swap as it will be the “cheapest” non-bolt in engine.

So, my radiator block-off screen works. We were on our way out to camp for T-day, loaded down, pulling a trailer, and a hill, I took my eye off the temp gage and blew the upper radiator hose.

A nice trucker, pulled over (thought the troopy caught on fire) he gave me two gallons of coolant, another guy stopped as he thought we lost a wheel on the trailer. I'd pulled completely off the highway, into the ditch to avoid getting hit and ended up kind-of stuck in the mud. The trailer was leaning precariously. I was able to slip the upper hose back on, put the two gallons of coolant in and about another gallon of water to top it off. Had to lock in the hubs, go into 4-lo (which still requires me to strap the 4-lo linkage forward as it wants to slip out of gear, so I had to lay in the mud to do that) rocked it forward and back and slowly pulled it out of the mess and back on the highway. What a fiasco, all my own fault too. Was pleasantly surprised that people stopped to help. A third vehicle going the opposite way slowed down and checked to see if we needed help. Kind of unheard of these days.

It all turned out okay, still need to wash the truck and trailer, but our camping trip was a success, no lasting damage to the engine from my inattentiveness that I can tell, block-off screen has been pulled down for now.

Done some research after your reply. The 4.8 and 5.3's do offer alot of bang for the buck.. Really amazing engines. My last engine swap was a 4BT into a 71 chevy pickup. I thought about it for over a year until an engine popped up locally on craigslist for $1700. Once I got going it took me a grand total of 17hours to complete the swap and be driving. I learned overthinking is counterproductive. We'll see if I dive into another swap.

In the process of fixing my windshield.
Fixed some rust, closed a gap that caused a leak, applied some Fluidfilm into the windshield frame and put the whole stuff back together: Cuishion seal in, Windshield frame up, bolted to door rails and down, FRP top back in position and bolted down.
The truck goes to a specialist on Wednesday to have the windshield glass replaced.

I will loose my BFGoodrich decal on the windshield, though. The only decorative element (kind off 🤣) on the all gray truck.
I was wondering to replace it with something else or maybe put some decal on the sides or doors. I was thinking of a compass rose in light grey or bronce. But maybe that's too common? 🤔
Any other serious suggestions?

Finally got an 80 series 1HZ dipstick in my hands. During my big summer maintenance spree on the cruiser, I swapped an 80 series 1HZ pan and pickup, only to find out that the dipstick needed to be changed also. I also now realize that i probably need the 80 series dipstick tube too, but it's close enough for now.

Ditched her in a Boulder field Friday morning, we half heartily tried pulling her out but needed some gear and parts.
Went in at -20C Saturday morning with parts and a floor jack. No photos of this because my phone was dead.
So, strapped her to the HDJ81 and a buddies Dodge to prevent rollover. Used the floor jack to lift and level the rear via the springs with lumber. Next was HiLift on front bumper to lift the front flat tire out between boulders which managed to shear my D/S part time hub off and curl the rim around and into the inner rotor shield. With that stabilized we then removed the pitman in order to drive the sheared relay rod part out.
Installed the new parts and go ready to tow kitty corner backwards on both ends because the boulders in front sunk you way past your balls.
Drove her home and continued to repair the dorkel, mirror and a minor piece of aluminum on the tray.
Did swap out the 80 series relay rod once home as I had grabbed the wrong box Friday night.
I cannot believe how lucky this was considering she almost rolled as well.

Fwiw , I have a low mileage 5.3 with standalone wiring harness , freshly rebuild TH350 and AA adapter to toyota split case sitting at my shop that might be up for sale , was planning to install it in my crawler but decided to stick with the diesel/manual combo for now

You can't hot tank that to clean up the block internals? Just curious more than anything.

Machine shop said they could try to clean it up but we’re worried about internal corrosion and damage in the water jacket.

When all of the machining costs and part costs were added up, a new 11400 was the more economical way to go.

Is that a mining truck 1HZ? I always wondered if that is how they look inside.

Got a new windshield today. No scratches and chips anymore.
The mechanic said, my frame is in immaculate condition, great 😃
Had to remind the guys to also glue the windshield, though. Hey, rtfm I gave to you 😉
