Spray some Lizard Skin under the hump while you have it off to reduce heat
Passenger side also is free of the old red, but I did leave the doors because they had such crazy cool speckling and patina. No telling how many layers of paint that is baked on there, LOL
That is a good one. Rusty junk is now cool. I don’t feel as bad being around the shiny trucks, LOL

Hello @wngrog - I love what you're doing here! My brother and I have been working on our farm's fj40 - I love the faded red it has now and curious what you would do to preserve it? There is a bit of rust we are dealing with, most of it is internal from the years of equipment being thrown in the back.
The interior we're thinking to cut and patch the rust holes in some areas. Others are too severe and we will have to replace.
Any advice would be helpful, thank you so much!

That’s a great one. Just start with CLR and work your way up. Don’t go too hard and scratch the paint. You will be amazed

absolutely enjoying this thread. Its inspired me not to repaint my cruiser,but my main issue is that the previous owner has spayed patches of blue paint over the original. I tried scotchbrite and water,but couldnt shift it. havent read through the 35 pages of this thread,but hoping for a quick tip on how to get rid of the overspray (apologies if already dealt with)

CLR is way better than plain water for that
600 grit silicone carbide wet/dry paper. 320 is what I use, but, it is also a bit rough. A cheap rattle can paint usually can be separated from the original enamel with acetone, also.
You see how those two bolt heads on the mid-tub floor is surrounded by cracked steel, particularly on the driver side? It is because the four body mounts on the rear sill are toasted and the whole rear tub is loose. I added some braces in the fender well, and some plate on the mid tub to hold everything together. Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread. Let me know if you need pics.
