Nice!

Mike

I think they fit up very well. Put on a couple hundred miles the last couple days. Really happy with them. They keep the cold off the door in the morning for my beautiful bride. And they cut down on the noise a ton. Which surprised me. All in all very impressed.

What did you make them out of? I am looking to do something very similar to my doors on my 1972... for the same reasons. Noise and insulation.

We started with black water proof cardboard for the backer. My buddy had some thinsulate we glued to the cardboard before covering it with black automotive carpet. We figured it couldn't hurt to put a little insulation in them.. And then sewed a welt over the edges. He had some mesh left over from a boat job that he made the map pockets out of. They were a nice touch! I can take some closer pics of details if you need.

wow, what a great build. I am considering the TDI for my 60, do you think the extra weight is going to be to much for it. I was also thinking about moving up to one of the newer ea189 motors to keep from doing a rebuild and starting with a slightly higher hp/tq rating

How built is your 60? The published curb weight for an FJ60 is around 4300lbs, my LJ78 in stock form was a little over 4800lbs. I lost some weight swapping in the TDI, but with a full load of junk and a rooftop tent I can still cruise at 70mph and pull 8% grades at 55mph, all the while averaging nearly 22mpg. I don’t think the weight would be an issue at all. I have been dreaming about doing a CR TDI swap on something, and would love to see a TDI-60.

This is a great build! I found @Godfather90 build last year and dreamt about putting my 06’ TDI into my 40 on day. Until I read his whole thread and realized I have ZERO ability compared to you guys. 🤣 Reading your thread reminded me of that fact! Glad I got rid of the Jetta before I did anything stupid 🍻

Thanks guys.

If I had to go look for a donor I would have done a 2.0 but I had the ALH 1.9 so that was the motor I used. I am still working out some bugs. But overall very impressed with it. This winter I plan on some motor upgrades. Colt stage 2 cam. Some head porting. And playing around with the tune.
And the 23-27 mpg are pretty nice too. I have to drive pretty nice to see 27. So that doesn't hapoy very often. :)

@AirheadNut, thanks for chiming in on the question. I am reading through your build thread right now and think it is a great comparison. As to how built... a better description is un-built. Completely stock and 75% gutted.

@fjdiesel use what you got for sure. Since I am not working from any on hand parts I figure going for newer could help and certainly would help make back some $ as I sell off the donor.

I love the 1.9 ALH setup. I drove a 2000 jetta for almost 10 years. Most reliable next to a land cruiser I’ve owned. Daily drove the hell out of it. Through some injectors on and it was a fun drive.

with a good tune, injectors and upgrading a few things you will scoot right along in a 40 with good mileage and a crap ton of parts and aftermarket.

I love the way my truck runs with the 2.0L TDI. if you get the gearing right it will move a pretty heavy load without too much fuss.

Its exactly what I wanted for my application but it might not be what you want. It depends on your driving style, but a 60 series could go either way. If you don't mind shifting and taking advantage of the torque curve of a small displacement diesel engine then you might enjoy it. The toque production makes it feel more powerful than it really is when coupled with the correct gear splits.

If you don't take advantage of it if will feel lazy and undesirable for most people I bet.

My truck it probably over 5000 lbs. I need to get it on the scales again.

Mike

Very well said Mike! I agree totally. I had to change my driving style to enjoy the torque. And the band is loooooong. Which again, I was not used to.

Well, not much tech lately...Still plenty of things that need to be done, but been spending a ton of time driving it. Last weekend we went camping up on the Pigeon River(MN/Canadian border). After loading up and heading out the decision was made that we needed to order air bags... It was a great trip with lost of great scenery. And no people. lol.

Drove the 40 out to Lemmon, SD for a family reunion at the Shade Hill Reservoir. Here we are at the MN/SD state line rest area on some little 2 lane.

The last few months I had the local machine shop working on making some interior door handles. On the Aqualu doors the knob to open the door is quite a ways behind you. It is kinda a pain. So, I had these made. They told me it would be the same price to make 1 set or 10 sets... So I had him make 10. I will put them together and try to recoup some of my costs..

Top left-Toyota 4 Runner handle I gave them for reference.
