Finished up framing the second cabinet yesterday. Everything is plumb, level, and square which turned out to be a more difficult process on this side of the car since this Troopy was most likely a tradey vehicle, and the stud walls were all banged up. One particular dent pushed the factory mount a good 1/2" out of square! Now I'm just waiting on some touch-open drawer hardware from Accuride (we used these in kitchens when I was an architect - they actuate with 1/16" of inward motion and pop out 2") and my drawer boxes. I wanted to build my own drawers since it had been a while but with my schedule getting busier by the day, I just ordered some from Cabinet Door Store. Once the slides and drawers come in, I'll frame out the slide mounts in 80/20 and get everything buttoned up.

For this cabinet, since the corners are at knee/shin level, I used the three-way couplers which require you to tap the ends of the 80/20. After finally getting a made in the USA tap (the cheap Chinese ones all broke even when using the drill on the lowest speed with plenty of oil), I was able to put it together very quickly.

A majority of this cabinet will be storage for groceries and other bags, with the space behind the passenger's seat being for the 12v system and air compressor. I hope to build some sort of cubby access to the stud walls in the future but for now, the replacement cards will do just fine. The tops of the cabinets at the ends will be secured by spring clips and the center storage above the wheel well will be on a piano hinge with McMaster t-slot bypass door hardware below. I'll run felt on the backside of the doors to keep them from rattling to hell.

It was a real battle for space here, as I wanted to be able to get into the back by only opening one door. The entryway is tight (6" of space) but we need this space for the kitchen drawers. Luckily, the OBS bags on the other cabinet fit a majority of our cutlery, so these drawers will hold our kettle, cast iron, and other kitchen items. Overall, the biggest space suck is Max, our dog's, bed. It takes up 24" x 40" which would be perfect for drawers but whatever. At least it makes for a good jump seat when we'll be shuttling MTB rides in the summer months.

I replaced my T10 instrument cluster bulbs with LED as two of them had gone out. I wanted to do the T5s as well, but couldn’t find 24v LEDs for that size (from my brief research it appears I am not alone here).

I spent some time searching because the original bulbs looked to be 30-60 lumens depending on different available options, and the LEDs I was finding were 300+. I didn’t want a distractingly bright cluster.

THESE are 100 lumens, match closely to the factory bulbs in brightness, and also have a green color option if you want to keep the factory look.

Still waiting on the drawer hardware but figured I'd get crackin' on the rest of the cabinets. Put in the bypass track and panels, the tops are all on piano hinges and the last panel behind the passenger's seat is 1/4" birch ply sandwiched in the extrusion. Once the drawer hardware is in, I'll finish off the build and then take out the wood to finish. I still have to sand it all down and poly the wood. Still waiting on the cushion for the top to arrive too...

John, it looks fantastic, very good stuff indeed. What's the thickness of the ply in the bypass track, and the bench top? Is the bypass track from an 80/20 supplier or did you source elsewhere? Thanks.
