Why no diesel swaps in 100 series LC’s?? (1 Viewer)

Best would be to get a front cut from an hdj100 and do a full loom swap along with the engine. To make it fit with the rest of the wiring you’d want to get one to suit the update status of yours (pre or post 2002).

You won’t find a better engine on reliability and longevity Than the FTE and is respectable stock power wise but really wakes up to a few mods. Heaps of companies here specialise in getting more power out - 400hp and 740ft-lbs+ is achieved quite regularly and Doesn’t significantly hurt their longevity, the internals are incredibly robust
Tell me more about the FTE you mention, please. I6? V8? Did it come with a 5 speed auto, or manual only?

So, is there some reason this is not a more popular swap? School me!
It is not popular because it is expensive and a lot of work. I'd suggest waiting 3 years and importing a diesel 100 or buying a diesel 80 now.

Here is a company that offers 1HD-FTE conversions into a 100. Cost is $36.5K

Okay, say you did all the work yourself and it cost half that much.... would you still be interested?

As said - 1HD-FTE is an I6. Shares the block and crank with a 1hz, so obviously alternator, Ac, starter etc.. otherwise it’s a different beast. 24v (single cam), DI, EFI. Always came with a 5sp Manual (H151 - essentially the same box as an 80 series and brand new 70 series) and auto. Up until 2002 it was a 4sp, 02-06 a 5sp.

it’s Achilles heel is certainly the initial
Purchase price, otherwise it’s as close to flawless and problem free as an IC engine can get. There are no known issues or universal recurring issues. $36 is a little over the top. All up my conversion from a 1FZ (Toyota i6 petrol) cost me about au$7k (that’s us$5k)after I sold wanted bits - well worth it for me

Speaking as a long time diesel bigot, many of the perceived advantages just don’t translate in a 100 series. My UZJ100 burns about the same amount of fuel on the pavement as my HDJ81 did. Diesel costs 10 to 20 percent more than gas for the last few years Torque is not lacking in the V8 gasser. Longevity even more so.

I haven’t driven a 1VD. My mind may change yet.

Yes. The other option I'm considering is an upgrade to a 200 series, and STILL NO DIESEL!! We need to make a petition to Toyota or some crap.

was your 80 a 1HD-T? These use more fuel than the multivalves, and more again than the FTE. Something’s wrong there though... In general, here at least - the FTE uses about 6-8 l/100km less fuel than the 1fz-fe and about 5-7 l/100km less than the 2UZ- all the same bodies. My FTE conversion paid for itself in the first 18months - it’s now making me money.

I’m still running stock fuel and turbo, and the car goes noticeably harder than a stock vdj79 (single turbo 1vd), but lags a little behind a vdj200 (compound turbo 1vd)

100’s with the FTE till 2005 are very cheap in the Netherlands because of legislation. You can find a 100 with good technics, but with not so nice exterior (dents and some rust) between 4500-6000 euro.
Best catch is a late 2005 with the 5-speed auto.
www.marktplaats.nl is the biggest ‘craigslist’ in the Netherlands.
You can buy the whole car with electronic etc.

There are actually quite a few differences in the bottom end between the 1hz and the fte, mainly to to with the turbo application. Toyota also made generational chances to the 1HD series block along the way, as such the fte and the ft are also a little different. All are relatively minor differences though, sorry to nit pick.

Also if swapping, use the FTE out of the 79, the 79 ECU does not have an immobiliser like the 100 series.

I stand by what I said - the only difference in blocks is the turbo drain and CPS hole - which in this context I find close Enough to say they share them. The castings and machining are identical - they just didn’t drill those two spots. Cranks are the same part number year for year. That’s the only bit I said they shared - although they do use the same main and BEBs, again year for year. You’re right there were upgrades along the way in all engines but year for year blocks and cranks (And associated bearings) have always been a common item. FT and FTE are very similar and although most parts will swap they’re also upgraded like the head, rods, pistons etc.. even the valves got upgraded halfway through the FTE’s life in 2002

In VDJ79 trim, stock the 1VD is lacking, my Dad had one, big exhaust and chip, my 13BT has far better low rpm torque up to around 2200rpm, then the 1VD would get going and rip all the way around the tach. We have a few stock as a rock VDJ79's at work = slow. Dad now has a VDJ200, MUCH better and what you would expect from a 4.5L twin turbo V8, my 1HDFTE will still outlast it though.

We're both correct in what we are saying, I take the blame for starting a fruitless argument.

I just remember reading a document that I believe was Toyota that outlined all the updates and upgrades for the 1HD* and 1HZ over the years. I cannot for the life of me find it now.

These differences are outlined in new model year “NCF” documents from Toyota....

NCF= New Car Features. Find them for the years that the -FTE was released and had concurrent 1HZ engines and they will show/explain the differences.

:)

The guy I bought my cummins swap mounts from primarily does 100 series cummins swaps. Australia based, though. It would be interesting to see a 100 series with a mechanical diesel and no electronics in person! I wonder how it would all work out.

Ive gone back and forth about trying it with a 4 litre 4 cylinder mechanical lunker. Pre 2003 I think would be doable. Would possibly lose ATRAC, but not sure on that.

they made them - you just never got them! Hzj105 is a fully mechanical Diesel, no ecu and cable from pedal to IP. People swap 1HD-FTs and 1HD-Ts into them here - very quick And easy bolt in bolt outs. A few Cummins too. Fzj105s are better for conversions cos they’d about half the price

I've got that document somewhere, there were many changes, was quite interesting.
They can be bloody hard to find via google. I’ve been looking everywhere trying to find the one that says what gearbox went in what landcruiser to settle an argument with a bloke claiming hzj80 and vdj79 don’t use the same box...
