Sweet! Thank you!

Amazing work. I’m going to link this build to my son, so he has an idea of what is possible. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

PTO Winch drive shaft this time. I took it apart. Got new bearings and rubber seals for it. Then the idea of using rubber seals started feel wrong. So I had no choise other than go to the work bench and try to find the old seals. I found them and they looked horrible.
IMG_20200114_180624.jpg

I had to dismantle and other drive shaft also. I needed the locking rings for the bearings. And as they are not standard size I had to use old ones. I got some more seals from that one. I had to weld one because rust has done its magic in all seals.
IMG_20200114_191009.jpg

They came out not so nice. The smaller ones are ok.
IMG_20200114_191453.jpg

IMG_20200114_191856.jpg

So I had to figure out something.
IMG_20200115_183609.jpg

IMG_20200115_192443.jpg

Then the felts. I went to a local store and found a polishing set. The box was fully shot and I managed to get it for -50% price. I took a felt pad from it and told the salesperson that she can throw away the other items. Then some cutting and I got good felt rings from it.

IMG_20200212_204025.jpg

I had the pillow blocks also zinc coated for some inside corrosion protection.
IMG_20200127_153648.jpg

Paint on everything.
IMG_20200220_174625.jpg

Assembled all together and mounted it.

IMG_20200223_131924.jpg

I put also the steering shaft protection plate in ready for the next step.
IMG_20200223_141406.jpg

All the glow plug stuff is on their place also. Had to buy new reistors on intake manifold. Old ones looked horrible.

Got it running last weekend.

Still a bit air in fuel lines. Also found some leaks.
IMG_20200307_123925.jpg

IMG_20200307_123933.jpg

There was a bit old seal under the service hatch and oil filter mount was together with old seal. Fixed those issues and tried again.

Running a bit smoother now and with no leaks.

Then I got the OEM rebuild kit for clutch master cylinder. I already had the same for brake master. So I put them together. Still waiting for some clamps so I could mount them permanently. Reservoirs turned out nice with some proper cleaning.

It was time to sort out the headliner. I bought one body that had a headliner in good condition. That one I broke when moving the body with tractor. Then I got one headliner from a friend. That one had holes. Then I bought one hole free headliner. That one had holes. Then I bought one with small holes. And last I bought one hole free. That had holes. Then I had couple of others from spare bodies that had holes in them. Impossible to find one without holes. And seems hard for people selling headliners to see the holes. A bit fustrating to drive around the country for headliners with holes. I had a upholstery shop to comhine one from three headliners. It went bad. Every new seam shortened the headliner for several millimeters so that one became too short. SOR has new ones, but they did not really want to sell one to me. Reason was a significant difference in part number between US and EU. That difference was the last number in part number. Then I was going to have one made but all the materials available was so much off so the last hope was to fix a old one.

So I started to work with this one that I bought last. It was still attatced to the roof so it was easy to wash and fix.
IMG_20200322_130949.jpg

It came out bad. But it was a good practice and the roof was a good work bench for another one. Next I started to work with the second best alternative. Worst spots was these.
IMG_20200331_200827.jpg

Glued them with contact cement.
IMG_20200331_203631.jpg

Mounted the headliner on the spare roof.
IMG_20200404_160359.jpg

Dropped some paint on the cracks with toothpick.
IMG_20200404_165334.jpg

And painted.
IMG_20200404_190248.jpg

Paint covered well all stains and discolorations.
IMG_20200404_174324.jpg

IMG_20200404_190220.jpg

For soundproofing I bought some 2cm thick sheets.
IMG_20200408_133458.jpg

When assembling the headliner it did not fit. Bows did not fit with the soundproofing. Then I cutted soundproofing away at the places for bows. Mounted the headliner again. Edges of the soundproofing showed through the headliner. Then I tore off all the sheets and went and got same material but 1cm thick. Left bow positions without any and now the headliner went on its place without any problems.
IMG_20200408_171818.jpg

Next day started to glue it.
IMG_20200409_115258.jpg

And finished product.
IMG_20200409_154245.jpg

I am happy with the result. Passenger side A-pillar went wong somehow. The headliner material has some issues. I think brake cleaner did something to it. I hope it gets a bit better when all the weatherstrippings are on their place. But otherwise the headliner looks good without wrinkles so I am happy thouh the A-pillar is what it is.

Also washed away desert dust from headlights assemblies. Sold the sealed beam lights and swapped Koito EU spec lights in.

Breathers for axles.
IMG_20200425_123642.jpg

IMG_20200425_133057.jpg

Had to make adapter for fuel tank breather. Fitment is quite bad at this end. The model I had for pipe bender was so rotten that it broke when touched so the final product became a bit off.
IMG_20200425_131604.jpg

Fuel gauge wiring on its place. Had to soak connectors for few days in diesel so it softened all the rust prevent coating thad had been sprayed under the car.
IMG_20200427_202332.jpg

IMG_20200427_202343.jpg

Gave some heat to the fuel tank straps so I got them moving. Then glued scrubbed rubbers on them.
IMG_20200125_173145.jpg

Fuel pipe with new gasket and filter. The car had quite new pipe so all it needed was some blasting and new paint. I was lucky as HJ60 tank tube is NLA.
IMG_20200112_163018.jpg

Fuel tank got new sender for gauge and washed felts. Inside of the tank looked very good also.
IMG_20200126_121900.jpg

IMG_20200126_114955.jpg

Then fuel tank on its place.
IMG_20200428_183345.jpg

Breather thing got back that washed foam seal. I got this one in great shape from a mud member.
IMG_20200125_173156.jpg

Then hoses. OEM clamps did not fit the smaller pipes. Outer diameter is larger on these than OEM hose. Have to source some not OEM ones that fit.
IMG_20200506_191052.jpg

IMG_20200506_201152.jpg

IMG_20200506_202814.jpg

It would be ready for gas up.
IMG_20200506_203121.jpg

Also breather container found its place.
IMG_20200506_204817.jpg

Dipped the clamps for OEM style rubberizing. I did not leave the drops as shown in picture.
IMG_20200429_145518.jpg

IMG_20200429_145606.jpg

All the stickers are also drawn ready. Latest was the sticker for the jack.

OMG, this is so good! Were you always planning to do a nut and bolt resto, or did you just go down the rabbit hole?

OMG, this is so good! Were you always planning to do a nut and bolt resto, or did you just go down the rabbit hole?

I just went down. At first I was going to just practise on welding with this one and make it a daily driver. But later in the rabbit hole I did not do the welding myself at all. This is my first car project. So at the beginning I thought it should be a easy job. How wrong was I....

A small update and a documentation of cleaning the door cards.

Starting with a regular condition drivers door card.

IMG_20200530_123155.jpg

For fabrics I used Chemical Guys Lightnin Fast straight from the bottle. I used a soft brush to scrub the dirt loose. Then washed away with clean water and Kärcher interior washing device (don't know the official name for it). Repeated untill I was happy with it.
IMG_20200530_130710__01.jpg

For the vinyls I used Solmaster AS40 solvent and a microfiber cloth. For the worst stains I used Bilt Hamber Surfex HD and toothbrush. Rinsed with clean water and microfiber cloth.
IMG_20200530_135517__01.jpg

And for the finishing touch for the vinyls I wiped them with 303 Aerospace Protectant.

I was afraid that the fabric had weared under the door handle but luckily it was only full off s***.

I have had so much motivation to work on this project now in the beginning of my summer vacation so I decided to make a small update.

First something before the vacation. I combined three rear heaters into one. End piece is raw plastic so nothing much to do for that. Luckily it does not show much when mounted under the passanger seat.
IMG_20200607_122545.jpg

IMG_20200607_123729.jpg

IMG_20200607_123737.jpg

Painted front fenders from inside.
IMG_20200628_212523.jpg

IMG_20200628_212555.jpg

At the same time tested the fitment on the antenna. Luckily the antenna hole in the fender was original. So the antenna mounted fine after figuring out how to do it. Antenna is OEM.
IMG_20200627_181320.jpg

IMG_20200627_181410.jpg

Then the vacation time. First assembled water hoses. Some original and some aftermarket. New clamps and heater valve. Replaced all clamps with wire style. The ones with locking pins seemed too complicated to use.
IMG_20200704_102319.jpg

IMG_20200706_121626.jpg

IMG_20200706_141345.jpg

Then to diff lock cables etc. Got the missing nla locking plates to cables. Handle assembly painted and washed.

Just to fix the handbrake cable and everything ready in this picture.
IMG_20200706_171547.jpg

Throttle cable and vacuum hoses with all clips and clamps on their places.

This view is almost ready too. I have to swap that hand pump to a new one and move ground cable to right place.
IMG_20200707_153016.jpg

To be continued...

Looks great! I too am finally finishing the cable locker install, thanks to the pictures you took for me! I need to source some of the cable retaining clips as well. They look like the brake line clips but are larger diameter. Very little still available from Toyota but perhaps they can be found from a different application (?).

You are getting close!

If I remember correctly in the axle ends clips are the same that brake lines. Other end is larger. Those are from some Toyota used for shifter cables. I bought them "used" so I don't know the part number or the modell where they are from.

Edit. I discussed with the seller and he said that these would be the ones. Genuine Toyota Shift Shifter Cable Retention Clip 90468-14016 | eBay
