Back to fan shroud. It's together, split in two and installed. Even split it was a pain to get the top half in, had to loosen the PS belt and pump to tetris it in. Back to the rig tonight. Hopefully with the shroud done, Spot will run cool and is sorted enough to toss on the trailer and take out for fun when the stars align.

Been picking away at more issues and unfinished things. Valves adjusted, idle brought down to where it should be (throttle position sensor out of adjustment so the ECU didn't know when to idle), oil pan and gasket changed as the old gasket was leaking badly, fuel gauge sender adjusted (ran it dry unexpectedly a couple weeks ago).

Through the night I got the front elocker control wired in, and the switches and indicators for it and the rear elocker worked into the dash. :)

Oh yeah, since the last update, the transmission locked up again, so I swapped in another from an old GMC grain truck. This one works much nicer than the first ever did.

sm 465 or 420?

420

Sometime before I started stripping parts off of Wobble Wagon, I broke the freewheel clutch mechanism on my 8274. The aluminum cover / guide snapped and the rod was tweaked a bit. Now I've made a new one with a bronze bushing, so hopefully this one won't keep seizing from steel on aluminum.... Still need to clean it up a bit, make a new handle and paint it, but it works. :)

Playing around with what I can build for a front bumper from stock I have on hand. Plywood silhouette, I like this basic profile. PS and DS are a bit different, I think I prefer the PS profile. Will have a tab for a shackle on the PS and the winch line will feed out through a hawse fairlead on the DS (winch will be mounted behind the driver's seat).

Getting at it..

Don't mind the $h1t shackle angle, planning to swap in 60 series rear springs (longer) and longer shackles. That should let me move the front axle forward an inch or so too.

Looking good and will be very unique with central mounted winch

I was going to angle off the bottom corners of the 2x6 like the plywood shows, but I kind of like the chunky look of the square corner as it sits now...

Was supposed to head back to work Friday, but weather is delaying rig move. :) Not sure if I'll have time to commit to steel, but starting to plot out winch and cable placement.
Cable will pass through bumper just inside driver side frame rail.

C-clamp standing in for a cable guide at the tranny x-member.

The winch (8274) will sit under floor where the driver's side rear passenger would sit, with the top 4 or 5 inches passing up through the floor. Plan right now is to house the winch in a large ammo box (if it will fit) to protect it from the elements underneath. Need to figure out a cross member to support the weight of the winch, and some bracing against the frame rail to handle the pulling force.

Are you planning to be able to use the winch line from front and rear as well?

At one time that's what I was thinking, but to start I'm just looking to make it work for front. It might work to rig a snatch block at the tranny x-member or beside the engine to redirect, but I have a feeling most times I'd want to self-recover backwards it won't be easy to monkey with the line under the truck...

Haven't been happy with the shackle angle I ended up with up front. Decided to try out longer spring packs made from a mingling of used 60 series OME front and rears.

The axle sits in a good position with the longer springs, but they stick out too far up front. Either spring option is going to need adjusting the location of the hanger. Leaning towards using the longer springs, shifting them back a touch and redrilling pin holes in the main leaves to keep the axle placement from moving back (and better place the shorter leaves). That will keep keep all 4 springs on the truck using the same main leaves for carrying a spare, and should give better flex than the shorter ones.

I'll try to get the springs sorted, then I can figure out what spring perch adjustment is needed when I go through the front axle so I get good caster and pinion angles.

Shackle angle will be much better now after moving the hanger 1.5" back. Looks like this setup will give about 1.5" lift from the 55 springs I had on previous. :) More room to step up to 35s.

New shackles made using 3/8" x 2" barstock and pins pressed out of old 60 series shackles.

where we at

Plan "D" was the final winner for front springs / hangers. Now there's a hole in the floor behind my seat with a 8274-sized ammo box in it.... and I've been hibernating thru must of the last month and a half along with more cleaning up around the yard :)

Finally met @simonliew in Winnipeg yesterday and got a peak at his 1hdt powered pig project:
