Sorry to hear about your brother but glad he is recovering. Healing juju for him for sure!!

Look in the 60 series forums for some of the insurance stories there. Basically, Insurance companies are not in the business of paying out money, rather they bank of the fact that there is a very slight likelihood that you will need to utilize their services and thus they "take" your money every month easily but will make you jump through hoops to get it back...

Things like maintenance based items, cosmetics (carpet, seats, paint) are considered total loss items based on the policy you have and thus will not be reimbursed. So don't even consider those items into YOUR number when looking at offers, as they will not cover that stuff.

As everyone else has said, start documenting similar rigs for sale. Go nationwide for your sales research and come up with a number that is a bit higher than the average price. Then add a couple grand depending on where your rig fell in that average.

For stuff like accessories, unless they are part of a stated price policy, most likely will not be covered. Depending on the company you may be able to work them into the price, but that really varies on agent, assessor, company, your policy, etc. As for the parts, if they are on the vehicle and you settle for a total loss without purchasing the vehicle back, they are the insurance companies, not yours. You can try and track the vehicle down at the yard and go salvage everything. But NOTHING on the vehicle is yours if you settle without a purchase back, again this may vary by your policy but that is the general SAFE way of thinking about it.

Good luck with the insurance company. All companies have good and bad traits, agents, etc. Hell my SIL is my agent for State Farm and I know for a fact that she is going to err in favor of her office/own pocketbook vs. my favor if we ever have to do something like this with my 60 or the wife's 4Runner.

I will say that when my old STI had an aftermarket double DIN touch screen stolen along with a couple other misc things, USAA was pretty solid about replacing like for like. They had an outside audio "specialist" suggest some comparable Alpine units and I actually ended up with a nicer version of what was stolen.

What little body damage was done was taken care of by a top notch body shop with no argument about cost etc. That's why I love USAA and even though their initial offer will likely be low, I would hope that they respond positively to your evidence of what the rig is actually worth.

Here's to hoping that your brother heals up quickly!

And here are some supporting for sale ads:

If the insurance company won't cover the aftermarket add ons I don't see how they can claim that they belong to them. I would see them as personal property and yank them off before any more is said and done. Worst case scenario they can object but then doesn't that add fuel to your case that they should have been covered in the first place? If they made a big deal about it I would rather pay a lawyer than just let them have them.

USAA will bone you over. They will not care one bit about any receipts you supply. I did this song and dance with them last Summer and ended up getting really screwed by them.

Sorry to hear about your brother hope he's ok. Sucks about the truck, I'd buy it back and transfer everything salvageable to another 100 then part out the rest.

Recently went through this with my 80. I rejected their first offer, they raised it quite a bit and that was pretty much their best and final. The buyback price hurt though, and it hurt that I couldn’t convince them to reconsider the declaration of total loss even though they bumped the value. they did consider my aftermarket stuff in the value. Maybe the hardest part for me was due to them not assigning you an agent. Every time you call you get someone different who has no idea the backstory and you have to start over with them making your case.

I have an assigned person at USAA, so that's a positive maybe. Not very responsive. They said they towed the vehicle on Wednesday, it's still parked in the same spot though. That might be a good thing for me for the time being.

When I first spoke with them they said that they would absolutely NOT come inspect it where it is, imperative that "Copart" tow it to their salvage facility, Seems I have no choice. Ugh...

I am hoping that they make a good first price, and a better 2nd price. I intend to buy it back, but we'll see. If I knew of a great looking body, I would drop it on the existing frame. I've even considered making a UTE but that makes more sense for my 80 than this one.

I am not sure how quickly the conversation goes as far as offer, buy back, and declaration of total loss. It sounds like USAA will increase the price for aftermarket products by $2500 because I had comp and collision. $2500 doesn't cover much at all.

Recovering costs for brand new leather, carpet, and paint I would think would be easier. ACV I would think has to take into consideration the new paint and leather. A comparable vehicle with similar miles but with rust, dents, dings, etc. and 15 year old cracked leather is NOT what I had. My leather is less than 6 months old. I don't know. It would seem like that has to increase the ACV.

At this point I intend to remove rear bumper, sliders, and wheels. I've got a set of foose "rims" that were originally on it and they will go back on. Suspension, carpet, front bumper, and seats are the "addons" after that.

Try for everything you can. For me they required comps to be local and no damage and currently for sale. No expired Clist ads etc. so if you find a comp send it to them right away so they have it. Needed to have VINs too and owner contact info. Good luck.

My Jeep was totaled a couple weeks ago and I also have USAA. My Jeep was built on 37”s, USAA wouldn’t pay me for the aftermarket parts but told me if I had the stock parts to replace them with I could remove them. The only part they said would effect the offer was my Gobi cargo rack, they referred to it as a roll bar/luggage rack, I asked how much of a deduction it would be and they said $200. I will take that $200 deduction for a $2500 rack. I completely returned my Jeep to a stock Rubicon, the final offer was $41k which isn’t bad case I paid $37k for it two year ago. USAA has always been easy to deal with on accidents and claims, for me. I’m shopping for a Cruiser now, been looking at 80’s and 100’s.

I hope they threat your right and your brother makes a full recovery.

I’d at least take the spare wheel and rear bumper/carpet if you can. With a car in that condition they are not going to spend the time to hunt you down to pay for them. I see cars at auction all the time with head/tail lights gone from people taking them off before the car gets taken away. You might even take the master cylinder, that car is going to be forklifted from the truck to an auction lot now. Up to your discretion though

I checked out the ad because I have a relatively low mileage (130k) 2006. I love how car dealers thoughtlessly write complete B.S. in their ads:

"When Toyota created this vehicle with 4 wheel drive, they immediately enhanced the performance ability. Easily switch between two and four wheel drive to take advantage of the improved steering and superior acceleration"

"This 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser has such low mileage you'll probably think of them more as blocks traveled than miles traveled."

It's like a stoned minimum wage kid is writing the ads while simultaneously playing a video game.

@musthave good luck with your claim and hope your brother is doing better... Just saw the accident thread. Let us know how things turn out.

@NoTempoLimit : They've been trying to sell that cruiser for a LONG time:

"5 new 20" wheels and tires" - Oh really?

At least the "frams" is in excellent condition with no visible rust anywhere...

Sometimes I just shake my head at these type of listings..

USAA is the absolute worst. Your journey has just begun, and the ending is never happy.

Ask them for the price to total it, and the price to retain the salvage and get a check for the difference.
Take as many add on's off now as possible.

this is why i am not overbuilding my 100.

budget upgrades only.

i had a custom built lightning from a shortblock to supercharger. book of receipts that totaled up to $45k in labor and parts. got stolen (and never recovered) and i only got 1/3rd of the that with a lawyer.

never again.

If you plan to put it back on the road after you buy it definitely check into having it insured again. I use allstate for our vehicles and was told in the last 2 months that allstate is no longer insuring salvage title vehicles -- I'm not sure that's gospel, or just one agent's point of view, but I would at least do some checking around to make sure if you do plan to drive it again that you can get covered. And if you're parting it out or just buying it for the aftermarket stuff I doubt it matters ( I didn't read every post in the thread )
