I am sorry to go over covered ground, but I have been searching through threads and have not found the answer I am looking for.
I have recently acquired a 93 KZJ78 and I live in the Colorado mountains. I am concerned about overheating and want to do everything I can to make this truck last. After reading a bunch on this site and others, it sounds like I will need to do a 3” dump pipe with pyro and then hook up my EGT gauge. I am not finding g a prefabbed part like this, but I know it has to exist. Can anybody poi t me in the right direction please?
Thanks a bunch!

I hope this helps a little as I have no familiarity with the 3.0L but, if you look at several of the 2L-te build threads you'll see that most of us made our own dump pipes. So, I wouldn't assume there has to be a pre-made one although I'm often wrong. Also, most have gone 2 1/2" exhaust and found it to be plenty although nothing wrong with going 3" either. Hopefully a few of the other importing the KZJ's now that they are hitting the 25 year mark can speak more intelligently about your needs.

I did a search and these guys came up (facebook). Could call them and see if they'll ship to the US: Kaiapoi Repowers Auto & Exhausts. Diesel & 4x4 specialists

I was just joking about delivering, but yes, that is what I am looking for.

So.... these guys can ship a dump pipe. Next two questions:
1) is there really much of a difference between a 2.5” and a 3” (they offer both)? I have read that the 4” is hard to fit and is really not much different than the 3”. ???
2) I understand that putting in my EGT temp gauge is better pre-turbo, but it is going to be significantly easier to install into the dump pipe. Will that work? I mean, I am measuring trends, right?
Thanks!

go 3" it fits , I bashed floor in a little to fit my homemade one and ripped off the soundproofing/heat stuff as well, Im 6ft with big hands and two left thumbs and I can still fit my fingers up to do the bolts / nuts up for the flange, also while its out check oil return on turbo as this will be way easier to replace with the exhaust out of the way(prone to cracking, oem replacement only bout $75USD , comes with a trick "joined copper washer" for easier install).

You could possibly fit 4" but making clearance around the flange for the nuts would be really hard as 3" only just clears the nuts on my homemade one.

I put my EGT preturbo, it was easy for me just to drill in place and tap as well.

With this size of an engine and the amount of air that it moves, is there really a difference between 2.5” and 3”?

Definitely bigger is better on anything turbo petrol or diesel on any size engine no matter how big or small

The restriction of the turbo alone creates enough back pressure to the point of being able to run 4" straight dump pipes-
look inside a turbo ex housing and you can see how small they are in there

plus big pipes always look cool

A lot of wise words that appeal to the man in me - bigger is better and big pipes are cool! :)

Did you TIG or MIG weld your dump pipe? I'm going to make my own as well with a 2.5 inch stainless weld elbow, I've found the Turbo side flange but haven't found an exhaust end flange. Would love to keep the flange on the exhaust side even though i'm going to make my own exhaust as well out of 2.5 inch mandrel bent. Looks great, cheers.

The flanges are MIG Welded, the tube is Tig, Tig welding is much more manageable on thin pipe, ie no chance of a blow hole. The triangle flange is machined recessed to fit the ring gasket.

Thanks Oldblue. I have a MIG welder but not TIG so I'll be able to make the dump pipe at least and then see if I can beg borrow steal a TIG welder.

Cheers,

Marc
