Figure I’d start a thread for my ‘68 and post findings as I discover and learn. Hope it will be of use for anyone else that may have questions on a 1968.

It is with utmost certainty that my newly acquired 40 is not in complete factory condition. Over 50 years of previous owners have inspired wire splicing and rigging to make stuff work. There are experts which will be quicker to point out discrepancy than I may recognize.

With that, here’s the body of work that I’m starting off with:

First thing I had to tackle was finicky lights. Head lights didn’t work, tail lights didn’t work. Essentially the only electric device that worked were the gauges in the instrument cluster.

Following the wiring diagram found on @Coolerman website, I was able to trace grounds as this is typically where things go wrong. After 2 days of this, Mark made the suggestion to inspect the white cable connecting to the amp meter in the instrument cluster. This was the culprit!

A previous short was causing sporadic connections. Cutting off the bad wire and crimping new ring connectors meant electricity was now delivered with consistency! This is a no go:

The good with this ‘68 is that it runs great, but at some point i’ll Undo the mess of rigging that went into it. Let me provide exhibit A:

Not sure if you all have seen this before, but I’m 100% sure this ‘yoda didn’t come with a honking nose air cleaner. Take note of the non-oem bolt plugging the hose closed I’m uploading more engine bay photos for the experts to chime in on the crimes committed to this 40. I note the absence of washer reservoir that would normally reside under the clutch master cylinder

Question for those more experienced: What the heck hubs are these? I’ve never seen them before on any 40.

Congrats on your new rig! Looks like a solid starting point.
Those hubs made me curious so I did some internet sleuthing. Looks similar to this.

Yep, those look very similar. This 40 was stuck in 4wd. I blew air through the vacuum tube to disengage. The 4wd indicator is no longer illuminated. I had to keep the hose disconnected for now, else the direction of airflow will engage 4wd. I plugged the vacuum hose with ear plugs for now until I can see why air favors ‘engaged’
Got new tires for it today as the old 31 were a question mark due to age. Went with 33x10.5r15

If you look closely, you can see the trail left by the ‘68 to its current lair

Nice clean looking 40. Sounds like your vacuum lines to the 4wd switching valve or on the vacuum shiftier could be switched.

Those are old Dualmatic cam and lever hubs. I think Selectro had a style like that too, but I could be wrong.

Neither the manifold or the carb are stock for 1968 either. The fitting behind the oil filter on the intake is for a brake booster.

Yes. I hope that everything is working correctly with those parts involved. A pcv valve is inexpensive, and they can be cleaned with carb cleaner. The hose needs to be good for the application as well, those fumes are not easy on materials, hence why you want to burn them.
