ive been told preventive service on my ‘90 FJ62 is. Clean oil pan, filter, new gasket and fluid may not be worth risk given it is working fine now. Are you in camp of don’t disturb if working fine, or do preventive work. 200k miles on it and I do not know last time it may have been serviced. Thanks.

The transmission doesn’t have a filter like in modern autos. It has a ‘strainer’ that is just a metal cover with a metal mesh strainer that keeps big particles from pumping through. If you pull the pan and clean the strainer and the pan, it can’t hurt anything and it’s never a bad idea to see if there’s a bunch of clutch material on the strainer or metal on the magnet. You only drain and replace a portion of the fluid by pulling the pan.

Transmission services are only a problem if you let some knuckleheads at a chain quick lube place "power flush" a well used unit.
Drop pan, clean it up, clean filter, new gasket, fill it with 5 qts good synthetic fluid, take the line in off your aftermarket trans cooler (you do have one right..?), place line into gallon jug, start engine, run 2 qts out, add 2 more qts to trans, repeat 3 times or so till you get good clean new fluid out. Reconnect cooler line. Check / Top off once warm. Done.

Perfect reason too service it.
Once you do you now have a point when you last serviced it.
And keep servicing it at the recommend interval.

Thanks for the response. That’s the advise I needed.

If the history is unknown and the mileage high it's a good idea.
