Heat deflector for the cat converter.
Anyhow, had one on the PS of my '97 (that's where the cats are). Tossed it long long time ago when I made my sliders. Our 80 hasn't self destructed yet...

Sounds like it is going to disappear
That is the anti-reflective deflector. It is painted black to make it look like your truck has more clearance than it really does. It also is a shield to protect your unprotected lg from being burned by the cat when you do NOT have sliders.
