I have a leak at the muffler and frankly I don't want to go down the road of replacing the entire exhaust system. So a few questions

1. Is the Stock Toyota 06119 Futaba muffler stainless? and if so what series?
2. has anyone had any success welding these mufflers?

It seems to be leaking from the bottom roll seem

And from a crack at the inlet weld. The discoloration is mostly Utah red sand, very little rust on the exhaust itself.

Yes, these systems are 409 SS. Use 308 or 309 wire to weld them.

Clean it up w/ wire brush and/or grinder.

Sweet thank you! I was thinking about trying it myself, but my welding skills are pretty limited and this seems like a delicate operation. I would probably clean it up myself before taking it in. Looking for a good welder in Utah.

I paid a local muffler shop $20 to weld the wye on my down pipe. That was 4 years ago.

Im having a hard time finding someone who wants to take it on and actually use stainless rod.

Yeah...I don't think my $20 bought SS wire......... I watched the monkey do the work and I'm pretty sure I got $20 worth......

In reality.....even if the use CS wire, it's better than a hole. Spray a little BBQ paint on it......

That's wacky. I had a crack in the exact same spot, a local shop welded it up ($30 if I recall). No idea what kind of wire he used. Mind you, I took it to "the hood" to get it done...

Stopped in at a local shop because they said they could do stainless. What they meant was they could put standard rod on stainless, which...yes. he had it over the pit and I didn't really care too much about it anymore so he boogered on weld and didn't charge me a dime. He didn't even wire brush it so...that will be interesting to see how it holds. Get what you pay for I guess.

On a related note - body work is SPENDY. I got a quote for what looks like very minor rust on the lower curve of the back door jamb where it had been previously repaired due to an accident early on in its life (2 owners before me) and because the rust is coming from between the panels...$1350 was the estimate. Ooff.

You may want to check your exhaust mounts if you havent already. I fixed a nearly identical crack on mine last weekend, and I'm pretty sure it was caused by two busted mounts letting the exhaust bounce around.

pretty sure it happened when I crushed my exhaust tip, but I'll certainly take a look around.
