I've seen a few 80's with ladders attached to the rear hatch. Is the hatch actually strong enough for somebody to climb this without deforming the metal? I'm thinking about having a ladder built, or going simpler, and having a grab bar installed using the spoiler mounts for better roof access. I do not have a swingout bumper, and I don't plan to get one either. I'm in and out of the cargo area too much. Any insight is appreciated.

I believe they had some out of the factory with them on. Having said that, not being a little asian fella and knowing how big the hinges are on the rear hatch I wouldn't use it. Put the tailgate down close the hatch and stand on that or get a swingout with ladder would be my thoughts.

Isn't the "factory option" ladder actually a series of steps up the D pillar?

Thanks for the input. My overall feeling is that the hatch is not strong enough, but I'll check with Gobi.

I was thinking that a simple grab handle at the top would be enough when I'm using the gate as a platform, but I'll have to do more research.
