How can i identify an h41 to h42 fj40 tranny?

The biggest difference is the 1st gear; it's much lower in the H41 (4.925:1) than the H42 (3.555:1). So if you can shift the transmission into 1st gear, you can turn the input shaft and count revolutions of the output shaft. If you can't shift it into first gear, then take off the top cover and look at 1st gear - it will be 38.5% larger (bigger diameter) in the H41 than the H42.

IIRC the H41 has a 16 spline output shaft and the H42 has 19. One of the gurus should be able to confirm.

That was a date not transmission type change. 8/80 transfer case switched to split case and nineteen spline. Earlier was sixteen.
