Just joined here from Japan. Been reading up as I just purchased a new to me 2008 Prado in black. Has about 25,000 original miles and is currently bone stock. That's going to change here reall soon. Still waiting for it to arrive from another prefecture down south. This will be a daily driver including town and highway miles. Not much off road at all except the occasional camping trip. We do get snow every year, but not tons.

I'm currently looking at the KMC Rockstar 2's in either 17 or 18 inches for wheels. Tire size is debatable right now. I think...I only want a 2 or 3 inch lift. They offer both in cool only options over here for anywhere from $300-500 roughly.

My question is, am I ok with just doing coils for my purposes?

Tires are figure will be 265/60,65 or 70/17 or 18. I've found some packages offering KMC and Terra Grapplers.

I'll keep reading here but, any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

I'll be sure to post pics once it's here at the house.

I'm not too familiar with the specifics of a Prado, but there's a spreadsheet for the GX470 that has wheel and tire combinations from about 30 members or so. Look for it at start [GX Offroad]

Yay, I'm not the only Prado on here now! Whereabouts are you nirschl? What engine/trim is in yours?

I was looking at those wheels too...but I also really like the simple look of the 6-spoke TE37's (well, there are a few companies making that design now) I work in the non-offroad (racing and motorcycles) auto industry and have a good friend at another wheel company so I'm poking around still on designs and pricing. We might be able to get wholesale pricing if I can find a distributor that carries what we both want in wheels and tires. Size-wise, I think 17x9 with a 0 offset is the best balance without going overboard.

Nice! Are you in Japan? I'm in Sendai. Beautiful region here in Tohoku. I ride my Harley all over.

Welcome. Looking forward to pictures

I'm near Kichijoji in Tokyo. (you'll have more fun where you are...the narrow streets of Tokyo aren't too fun with how big these things are) I am building a cabin out in Niigata though so I pass by your area about 1-2 times a month. Harley...oh, we need to talk!

Haven't checked out the wheels you mentioned but I will. Really love those KMC's though.

Yeah, I saw em on Yahoo Auctions and such before. My only worry is they only offer 17x8 +10 and 17x9 -12. 17x8 +10 is a lil too conservative. 17x9 -12 may be a lil too aggressive but might be workable.

BTW, if yours is anything like mine, despite the trim, there was no cruise control. All it took was a 2,500yen stalk/panel set on Yahoo Auctions to get that functional. (though I've found the cruise control only goes up to 115km/h)

Got a link for the cruise control? I just ditched my Alphard I drove for 10yrs and I added the auto cruise to it as well. 5min install. Was thinking to pull the switch for a friends Estima. Would love to pick up the new one. Yeh, stinks that they cap it at 115 but comes in handy as I do lots of highway miles. My Harley even has auto cruise.

I actually did a quick search on Yahoo Auctions and came up with nothing.

Forgot to mention, I'm also down your way quite often. Be down to Fuji Snow Resort on the Harley for the big Day Trip Meeting 7/7-8. Been for the past few years. We can certainly take this of board and chat. Cheers

Yeah, driving to Niigata and back without CC would be hell. First thing I did to it. Hasn't arrived yet but I also bought a Lexus airbag with the steering wheel controls since my new navi doesn't display the audio controls when in map mode. (no physical buttons on the navi so no other choice)

I don't see any 120 listings but this is the same thing:
送料無料 150系 ランドクルーザー プラド クルー... - ヤフオク!
You just need to find the right color 120 panel to match your steering wheel (if you care)

That'll work! Cheers

Are there any negatives to using skinny tall tires 255/80/R17s on 17x9 -12 wheels? Or is it perfectly fine to put skinny tires on the wider wheels?

I recall reading that some folks (a couple guys on GXOR) have thrown a bead when airing down below 20 psi when running a 255 tire on a wide rim- I will have to do some more research to get the specifics on what width the wheels were.

EDIT: The recommendation was to go to an 8" tire. I used my wife's facebook but here's the link- it may work.
