New to the 40s (1 Viewer)

Hello, Iv spent the last couple of years trolling around the 60s forums. Tomorrow I’m going to pick up this 79 FST. Took it for a drive a couple of days ago. Needs some front end work, carb cleaning/work, and some Bedliner removed. It has a Saginaw pump but I’m not sure what box it has. I’m nervous as to what’s under the bedliner,but the underside looked pretty good. The tailgate has been sealed shut. Not really sure how the tailgate would function on the softtop. Initially I was looking to trade one of my 60s for it, but my wife gave me the ok to buy it instead.

It has a shackle reversal with Ford shock towers up front. Some kind of autolocker in the rear, PO wasn’t sure on brand. Transmission shifted nice but has a lot more play in the shifter than my 60. I believe he told me it has Corolla seats in it. Pulling the choke makes it idle very high. Is that normal?

someone did some fancy bodywork to the rear tub.
I don't think it is a FST.
looks like a Saginaw box out front, check the crossmember for extra support or boxing where it was cut.

I just read about the FST and you’re right.I guess they stopped importing them a few years before 79? Well hopefully one day I can get a hardtop for it. I wish I knew a 40 guru around central Texas to tell me what all is going on with the body.

It fits! It’s gonna take some work going through everything. I was spoiled with my 60, it was clean and very unmolested. First order of business is a carb clean, Or figure out if the desmog is what’s causing it to run like poo.

is that as far as the garage door goes up? doesn't look like a hard top would clear.

Yeah that’s it. It might not clear, but it doesn’t look much taller than the 60. 3_puppies I believe you are right on the Saginaw box.

I'm sure your power steering hoses work ok, but I sure don't like the routing. If you get a chance take a gander at ebay #261702058064, especially the 2nd and 6th photos- - -much cleaner low profile routing.

Ok will do. it needs to be worked over due to a pretty big leak anyway. Thank you for the heads up

Got a little scared today when I started peeling back the bed liner on the driver side floor pan. As I peeled it back I found a lot of body filler. It turned out to be filler over unfinished welds at the seams of a replaced pan. But no rust rot so far.
