so when we set to recirculating air.... where are the intakes located that take the interior air and recirculate it?

Now that this question is answered, can I ask another one?

Last time I went offroading I had some muddy water coming up and over the hood. It got into the vents and the car got very damp on the inside.

My thoughts were that if next time I would recirculate the air this wouldn't happen.

Is there some sort of drain for water coming in the air intake that is located in front of the windshield?

Yes, both the outer intake tray and the inside airbox pan have drains. They can get clogged but can be cleaned by blowing out with compressed air.
