Oh absolutely. It would take an alien spaceship falling into Goose and cutting him in half to consider not repairing. Even then... we'd try.

Roll the truck, problem solved, then you can mix drinks while help arrives.
You're an idea man. Management material.

I would think the conversion is pretty suspect, but the torque converter total failure doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility either.
I would think you shut it down immediately on power loss? If the converter went out, the debris might not have reached the pan and you wouldn't have that clue to look at. Blow out the trans coolers to see if any junk comes out there?

I was doing 75mph and passing a truck up hill so when it first went and I looked in my rear view to a semi catching me fast I put my foot deeper for a second until I realized there was no point. Then I got off of it and came to a stop sideways sliding stop on the banked shoulder. Tried all the gears and combinations I could think of and shut it down. Maybe enough time for debris to get down there, but checking the cooler makes sense.

Okay, update. I hate it when I find these threads and there is no update.
1. With the pan off and oil out I had the wife bump the starter and you can he a horrible metallic noise right in the middle of the trans.
2. Any hope of it being just a solenoid is toast.
3. A friend that works for Toyota Corp took a look to see if there were ANY re-manufactured transmissions or even parts available. None what so ever was the answer.
4. With all of the above in mind I'm going to put in a junk yard trans. IF the local Mud affiliated dealer does it, Camelback Toyota, then there is a 6 month warranty. They would flush it out and replace any external seals. Flush the cooler as well. Then we have about 2 months of use to abuse it and make sure there are no issues before leaving town on an extended trip.
So, that's where we are.

In the meantime, we might as well do a ton of other preventative maintenance since the truck is just sitting and waiting.

Subscribed to hear how this ends.

Make sure you do your engine rear main seal while the trans is out. Easy 10 minute job. Other than the 16 man-hours to pull the transmission............

looks like you have a A343F so you must have the late 95 obdII version? i have a trans on my floor with good internals and a bad case due to drive shaft break at highway speed

but really very rare failure mode for a trans like others have suggested look at all mating splines/bolt points/connections. i've just recently had problems start with my A343F (might be engine) but i'm running a well tuned 4bt cummins known for eating Chevy turbo 400's (a built proof auto in most peoples eyes) due to it's aggressive 4cyl pulse at low rpm. But i've been running 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear lockup at 1700ish rpm with lock up sometimes pulling it down 500rpm which is very aggressive and not recommended . i'm playing with it to see what kind of economy/power to the ground i can get out of it.

I just spent my cash on my sweet LCP gullwings.
I brought this idea up a little whole ago! Even posted it on the gull wing thread abou mounting it upside down. All I got was one reply from some one saying it was a dumb idea. Other than that silence.

Did not want cloud the trans repair but since the OP had some interest:D

I can alter the CAD to reverse the latches and hinges on the next run on a few. The buyer/s will need to design make the stop for the 'shelf'.

Post interest in a Gullwing window thread going forward.

No worries. Link for reference: LandCruiserPhil (LCP) Gullwing window
I'd do the flip down option since the way my truck is setup I can't really reach in to access any gear, but for now these unexpected costs are priority.
