Hi guys , I have a steel cable on my winch , and won't be using it for some time .
it will take a lot of rain and dust ( west African trip)
how shall I maintain it ?
was thinking of lube it with some grey grease ?
would you recommend this ?
or anything else ?

bye Renago

Google "wire rope lubricant" for sources of the right stuff for wire rope. Amazon, Granger, NAPA and many other places carry the stuff you need.

could use poor man under coat, 50/50 mix of diesel and bar oil. the bar oil has additives that will help prevent rust and the mix will be thin enough that you can just mix it and use a spray bottle to apply

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions .
Very useful , this opens a big window on potential problems that I only imagined superficially.
The environment in which the steel cable will be is Africa , sand dust , mud , water and long mounted of dry hot weather .I think , suppose to use my PtO winch only seldom ,maybe 1-2 times in a year .
The cable has not been used for many years , I bought it second hand .
It is in rather good shape , no rust , but not greased either .
I will start in cleaning it with diesel fuel.
Then to lubricate I with a teflon dry grease .in order to have less sand sticking on it as possible.
It won't be Using the winch very often ,so I have made a cover in plastic leather ,in order to protect as much as possible .

Bye Renago
