I'm thinking about buying an FJ60/62 and I came across this 1990 FJ62. Since I don't know much about the 6X series, I don't know if this is a good deal or not.

I've edited the description to remove extraneous stuff.

The pics of the truck look good, but, of course, pics can be deceiving.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

condition: good
cylinders: 6 cylinders
drive: 4wd
fuel: gas
odometer: 243000
paint color: grey
size: full-size
title status: clean
transmission: automatic
type: SUV

She drives straight and the automatic tranny works great.

She has 243k miles and just got a brand new exhaust system ($743).

Just spent $1400 at Land Cruiser Specialists (LCS) to go through the truck and make sure it was road worthy.

She just received the inspection and registration sticker so no need to worry about that for a year.

The truck does have some rust areas on the frame rails (it's 28 years old but they are an easy fix.) and needs some work on the A/C (could just be a low charge?).

I plan on putting a new thermostat in tomorrow.

The Pioneer sound system face plate was stolen in transit but I have an original OEM radio to go with the truck.

There are practically new tires on the truck and the brakes are in great shape.

Just found the original paperwork for the truck in the glove box!! The original window sticker, owners manual, warranty binder and original owners in Nevada. You never see this stuff!!!

Here are some pics.

I would stay away. Obvious bad respray, missing side emblems, rear window rust, and disclosed frame rust. Too many tick marks in the wrong boxes. Cleaner ones out there for the same money.

I can smell the rust under that paint job.:cautious:

If you’ve got $9500 to spend and already had an LC garage inspect it and paid $1400 and have plans to do a tstat, why are you seeking opinions?
Seems like you’ve made up your mind.
I’m no rust expert but seeing rust ridges under paint def indicates the seller covered some up. I’d try to get him down a couple grand at least, esp since you spent almost $1500 on it already. Lighten the price for some expenses near in your future.

I wouldn't be a buyer in that one. There are too many oh maybe's, especially for that amount of cash.

It looks like there is body filler around the rear cargo windows.

The bubbling/peeling paint is bad prep work. That will continue to show up in new places as time goes on.

Id inspect very carefully before proceeding.

I haven't spent ANY money on this truck. In fact, I haven't even seen it in person yet.

HE said in his ad that HE spent $1400 getting it checked out.

Ah. Glad for the clarification, I don’t see where it says ‘he’. Have you seen the receipt or called the garage?

I just bought a 62 with a little less miles. I paid a good bit less, but my rig needs paint, dash, and has some oil leaks. Mine is pretty much all original. When I say all original, I mean every hose and every rubber part! It is very time consuming to replace these things, as you tend to find other issues when you get in there. For example, I wanted to replace the rocker cover gasket. To get to that I had to remove the dizzy, which led to a new cap and rotor, new vacuum hoses, heater hoses. How do you tear down the front of the engine to replace the timing gasket and not put on a new water pump? It takes 1/2 a day to remove the fan shroud!!

Some of this stuff is NLA, so it takes time to search and find other options. All of a sudden you have 1-2K in parts, and not even close to paint yet. You can wind up having 15K in a 10K car! I am very good at that.

For reference, my rig drove and ran very well to begin with, but I just didn't feel comfortable depending on 30 year old coolant lines. For me they are not investments, they are a hobby. If you are buying it to use (not for tinkering) then by the best car you can afford. If it has rust I would steer clear.

Sorry. I didn't make it clear that all the info about the truck wss from his ad.

I was going to ask to see the report from the shop if it turned out that it was worth the time to drive over and check out.

I have seen the original window sticker and sales paperwork. It was originally sold in Nevada.

Personally I would look for one with an original paint job. Not because it looks better, cause this truck looks good. But because you can see the rust or issues easier.
Reality is ALL 60 series have rust. Toyota built them with bare seams and used metal inherent to rust.
There is no perfect ones and at some point you will buy one and start the journey of repairing it to your standards, or driving it as is.

My 60 was relatively low to no rust when I bought it. A summer on the coast and lo and behold it sprung rust everywhere. Then I repaired it all, only to have it pop right back out again.

I guarantee there is bad rust under that shiny paint. So while you are looking, don't hesitate to look at other 60's with a little rust. As they all have it anyhow.

I wish they made an aluminum body for our 60's!

So do you think he bought it to flip it?

He claims he's had it for a little while and planned to restore it. He went on to say that he's since gotten a '65 Corvette and wants to restore it instead.

Who knows what's true or what his intent was/is?

I wasn't planning to pay his asking price, even if it turned out to be a decent deal. I don't mind, and even expect, a little rust here and there as long as the truck is mechanically and structurally sound and the rust is not too bad.

I hear you. I definitely would prefer a truck with original paint for the reasons you cite.

Plus, I kinda like the patina on a old truck.

Pass.

Looks like the seller got hit with a flip job and wants to unload it. At least he is being honest from the description you are telling us.
