I'm JP and this is a build/repair thread of my 1984 HJ47 Troopcarrier.

I bought it stock, 4L 6 cylinder diesel and a 4 speed transmission.

The aim is a reliable, efficient daily driver, tourer, and toy.

I have done a lot already but I will start from the beginning.

When I bought it. Lots of body filler, poorly done paint, tyres from 1992, etc.

Removed church seats and carpet from the back, got some new tyres and started repairing rust.
The tyres were removed from a new 2016 Land Cruiser at the dealership.

First time off road

Bullbar made from cutting welding a damaged bolt-on bullbar to the stock bumper.

Lokka diff lock for the rear. The cheapest one there was, also the easiest to fit. Didn't even need to remove the carrier or ring gear.
I have since done 20,000km on it with no issues.

2" lift medium duty springs from 4WD Systems and foam cell shocks. EFS greasable anti-inversion shackles.

First drive with the locker and it is much better than before. But needs another one.

Love the troop carriers!

They are great, the only problem is that there is a lot more metal to rust.

Took it to Terowie, big rocks there but didn't do any damage except the tow bar took a beating.

Went on a 4,000km trip east along the coast and up through the Victorian Alps. Very steep tracks and freezing temperatures, the best trip I have done yet.

Got a Hayman Reese tow bar rated at 4,500kgs. More than I plan on towing but makes a good recovery point.

Nice truck, where abouts did you get the tow hitch?

I bought it off someone who had a few troopies. They are still available to buy new from Hayman Reese, part no. 00665R, but they are now only rated at 2,500kg.

Fuse box after. 2 Narva 2 way boxes. One constant power, one "on" and one "accessories". Still one section left, will probable be another "on".

Went to Portland, Vic to play in the dunes.

The all powerful 2H has no trouble blasting up even the steepest of dunes.

All back together will most of the rust repaired.
I used an early style front because it was what I had that wasn't rusted and I like the look.
I got a pair of genuine early indicators for cheap. I prefer these because they are steel. The plastic ones I used before would crack in the sun and on rough roads.
The headlights are semi sealed beams with park lights.
At this point the only original panels are one rear door and one front guard.

I'm digging this 47. Looks like you are getting good use out of it.

Lots of use, I drive it every day and try to get in 4WD as often as possible.


Got a new exhaust after having the old one fall off a few times.

Winch solenoids were having issues with water, replaced with a Runva waterproof solenoid.

Got together a set of the least rusty wheels I could find

Got some Superior high clearance u-bolt plates. They are made for the rear of a 70 series but fit front and rear with some modifications.

33" tyres and the u-bolt plates together give almost 2" more clearance under the springs, as well as a smoother surface and prevents the u-bolts catching on things and getting bent.

Dual battery system with a 250amp automatic solenoid, as well as 00 gauge battery cable going to the winch

While I was doing the wiring I added a manual battery link switch (for winching and jumpstarting) and a winch switch on the dash.

The double bed setup I used. Since then I have made the bed higher, it can be converted into a single bed by removing a piece and the fridge slides out the back.
