Folks,

I have a 1972 FJ40. I just bought FJ60 disk brake parts...everything from knuckle n out.

Only thing I'm confused about is my FJ40 inner axles... Would they work with FJ60 birfields ?

I don't need inner axle shaftS from FJ60 ...correct ?

Can someone please help me out and confirm that parts that I have will all I need. I do understand that I will be needing a bushing for my tie rod ends to work with FJ60 arms.

Thanks
Zaf

Use the '40 inner axles with the '60 birf on them. Will need some grinder work in the knuckle balls to get the larger '60 birf to fit.

Thank you so much Tool R us. This is the confirmation I needed. I didn't wanted to get stuck with looking for FJ60 inner axles.

Thanks you so much again.

X2

Inner 60 axles won't help as the 60 axle is wider.

you can use the short side inner axle from the 60, those are the same as a 40.

all the length is gained on the long side inner shaft

Make sure to buy the half moon c clips. They always break when pulling the axle shaft off of the birfield

Hoots, where's the fun in that?! :D

Make sure you birfs are good before you put them in, or just go ahead and buy Longfields. That way, you only change them out once.

Let everyone know how much fun you have getting the new C-clips into the birfs.

Thanks everyone for helpful comments. I got all the info I need. I have disk brake with brackets on it right now but I don't feel safe so that is why I'm moving to 60 disk brakes.

I added pictures of my FJ40. It is built for Highway cruising.

I found this video ....

Im hoping this method will work with my FJ.

Martack is fine, but I still prefer the OEM method. I use the hose clamp in conjunction with a short piece of 1" schedule 40 Electrical PVC conduit, it is slightly more pliable than the white PVC water line. I split the PVC lengthwise and use it to compress the clip and keep the clamp lower so it doesn't interfere with the Birf and release the clip prematurely. Just like removal, you want to try to get it done in one smooth, quick, deliberate motion.

Hi Zafar thanks for bringing this up...I have a 1977 FJ40 and I was at the local scrap yard looking up BJ60 front diff. The scrap owner is ready to part this diff with the HUBs. However, he cautioned me that the FJ40 birfield is smaller compared to the BJ60 Birfield and the 60 series hubs wont fit. PLease advise if this is the case? Its difficult to get a guy to part with the hubs as it is and now am not sure if the hubs would actually fit my FJ40. What if I come accross a FJ60/FJ62 series hubs and knucles. Will they fit as it is or do i need to get additional parts / kits. I am not too happy with the drums as braking causes my car to veer to the right. Appreciate all you gurus to help me with my build and issues highlighted above.

Take the axle! As mentioned in this thread, this is a common conversion. All you need to get the birfs in is a little grinding on the inside of the axle knuckle ball. If you were combining this with a C&T you could just swap out the knuckle 'balls'. Either way, it's a pretty straight forward project.
