This is a long shot seeing how old this thread is, but I'm looking at driving up to Madeline Island for a wedding at the end of the month and would be interested to know about some scenic areas or trails in either Nicolet or Ottawa NF areas.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Depending on your route, you might head through the middle of the Chequamegon-Nicolet national forest. A good chunk of the northern third of Wisconsin is national forest. Probably the most popular off-road trail in Wisconsin in the Pipeline by Mountain, WI, but much of it has been closed due to abuse. Other than that, throw a stone and you can find forest trails. I would recommend stopping at a DNR station ( or downloading) a copy of the MVUM map for the forest so you can see exactly where you can and can't go.
