Hi All my name is Adrian I'm new here

I am looking at importing a 70 series to canada.
I am getting confused with all the different designations of models.

I want a long wheel base 4 door 70 series with a 1HD or 1HDFT engine

What would this be called in Japan

Thanks

Answers:
1) expensive
2) rusty (in some cases)
3) wonderful
4) impossible (1HD-FT not a stock 70 Series as I recall)

Wander through MUD using the search function and read up. Have fun and welcome!

I have been thoroughly searching through the Forums.

I want a long wheelbase 4 door that I can tow with and has lockers.

Not sure which engine best or what is offered in a 70 series lwb

So much information to absorb I'm getting dizzy lol

I know this will vary depending on who I'm asking and their personal opinions.

I live in Canada so I can get one that's 15 years old instead of 25.
Any suggestions, preferences you all could give me.?

I want towing power, lockers, 4door, reliability and as close to the 15 year old minimum as I can get.

Thanks
Again

If you want four doors your limited to to a turbo diesel wagon or you could get the 2002 1hdt in a ute or troopy from Australia.

76 and 77 series have 4 doors, but as far as I know they never came with 1HD engines.

I believe in Canada you have a more lenient rule for importing, which stands at 20 y/o vs 25 y/o in US.

Check out mobile.de for deals all over Europe (LHD), vs Japan or Australia (RHD).

80 or 100 series turbo diesel Sahara would be my pick for a family wagon.

That's exactly what I'm looking for a 4door diesel Cruiser for overlanding with the family.

I'm trying to narrow down the model I want.
I need to provide the Importer with the info for the model I want him to find me

I like the 70 series but I'm not married to the idea I just want a 4door turbo diesel Landcruiser that I can tow with and fits the whole family

In that case just say a 4 door diesel LC, instead of asking about a specific model and then in the end you are not open to it.

Maybe you should simply google a few LC's and see which series is more appealing to you.
There is more than just looks and 4 doors when it comes to LC's

IFS vs Solid?
Locked or not?
Coil vs leaf?
auto vs manual?
2 vs 3 rows of seats?

1HD series never came in a 70 series. It did come with the 80, 100 and 105 series.
Toyota diesels lack power without substantial and very expensive mods.

A GM V8 swap is a lot more appealing to the Toyota crowd, lots of power and easy to work on.
Parts for a diesel Toyota are not easily found in NA and may be pretty expensive to obtain.

Start reading this forum to get an educated point of view on models, powertrain, availability, desirability, value retention, etc.

Sorry Guys I'm sure you are tired if answering questions from noobs.

So the 76 and 77 are the 4 doors - what where the engine options for those styles - are they desirable or is the 80 series going to be better suited for my needs - towing and off road

The 80/100/105/200 wins hands down as a wagon for off road ability, towing, reliability, economy etc and the Sahara has all the creature comfits to suit the family. The 70's are more truck like suited for hard off road with a good pay load so best keep the family happy and smiling. It worked for me when I had my youngsters. :)

Did you check Toyota on line? I agree it's very confusing to us Canucks because different models were imported here. I've got an 80 from the States and a l h drive 70 that I don't think was imported as is to the US.

Lots of misinformation here.

1HD engine iterations did come in 7x trucks at the beginning of this current century in certain markets.

Parts are not difficult to find and expensive is a relative terminological designation that is a straw man here.

Toyota diesels are meant for reliability and longevity-- Not US-style power expectations and infrastructurural conditions.

Don't believe everything you read on Facebook.

HDJ79 came with 1HD in Australia.
It is a true truck, not a SUV.
It was released in 2002, which does not make it legal to import in Canada, but again it's not a 4 door as the OP stated he is after.

The lack of availability in NA makes everything very expensive relative to what parts are offered here for the engines imported officially here by Toyota. Shipping anything from Australia will cost a pretty penny.
Don't forget 1HD engines sell here for $10k.

"Toyota diesels are meant for reliability and longevity" is a correct statement, however when you factor in the age of those engines and the mileage they all have the statement will have to come with a clause... "when new".

At 400k miles or even Kms it already is an old engine and one should expect to perform some kind of work on it. It even gets worse when the maintenance was sketchy and undocumented. Oil changes at 10,000 mile instead of the mud anal changes at 5000 miles. What type of oil was used? Was the oil filter changed at every oil change or did it see 2 or 3 oil changes in between? Yes, it does happen out there in the world.

Diesel filters replaced? Where did the truck/SUV spend it's life? It affects the quality of fuel used.
Were the injectors replaced? How does the injection pump sound like? Were the nozzles "tuned" by a "specialist"? Did the same specialist advance the timing just a little so it can have a little more power? How many air filters did this engine go through in it's entire life?
How can you tell if the engine was idled a lot?

A better question to the OP would be, what exactly do you plan on towing? What is the weight of the loaded trailer?

LCs use different frames on different series. Different suspension setups. Even if the powertrain is the same, it does not mean the towing capacity is the same. There are many other factors affecting towing.
Even the wheelbase length will make a huge impact on it. SWB vs MWB vs LWB.

So tell me, how can be so sure the engine is reliable only by the sticker it has on it from the factory, when in fact it spent a lot of time outside of the factory compounds?
