White smoke and sputtering can also be caused by air getting in to fuel lines.
This well affect the dynamic advance in the pump and cause misfire.
Start checking for air bubbles in the fuel with clear hose

Has someone moved the timing from the mark on the flange? Looking like turbo seals to me
